Eastside Edge: L.A. Guide to Echo Park
Updated: March 04, 2009
Want the spirit of New York City's Lower East Side without the subzero weather and skyscraping tenements? Then it's time to hit up Echo Park, L.A.'s edgy Eastside enclave for the painfully hip. Just like its East Coast counterpart, this emerging 'hood is ripe for under-the-radar restaurants, divey bars and cooler-than-thou shops. You'll be sporting the obligatory asymmetrical haircut in no time.

Oui, oui: If it's a little taste of France you crave (minus all the attitude), you might wanna check out this family-friendly spot where Gallic comfort food and moderate prices meet. You can even take a bottle of vino to go from the 600 selections that are "priced so low you'll think they're a misprint."

Masa-Echo Park Bakery & Cafe

Its name might be a Spanish word for the corn dough in tamales, but this homey neighborhood joint is all about Italian (by way of Chicago) pies. The deep-dish pizza is what they're known for, but there's also plenty to gawk at from the bakery case filled with French delicacies.
Chango Coffee Inc

Another favorite taking its cues from the local Latino flava (its name means "monkey" in Spanish), this gritty caffeine haunt offers a serious selection of java, loose leaf teas and packaged goodies. Grab a seat alongside the mural-splashed wall outside and try not to stare at that girl with the five nose rings and fuschia-colored hair.

Proof that gentrification hasn't totally rendered this 'hood free of security concerns, this iron-gated bistro is all about creative seasonal fare at an affordable price. Think wild mushroom galette, Szechuan-style fried calamari and roast Jidori chicken with glazed brussels sprouts. Weekend brunch is really good, too.

Echo

For the heavy herd of artists, musicians, writers and other self-involved "hipsters," this after-dark hangout is ground zero for mainstream-free music. After all, being surrounded by dusty floors, sticky vinyl booths and mirrored walls is the only way to get your groove on.
Little Joy Cocktails

Little more than a hole-in-the-wall, this unsuspecting venue has become a prime post-9pm destination for a mix of boho types, the just-turned-21 set, longtime locals and resident gays and lesbians. You might not get any top-shelf liquor, but the bartenders are usually cute and the music most often rocks. 'Cause it's the little things that bring the most joy.
Gold Room
Read Reviews1558 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026 (map)
A classic dive bar in every sense (narrow space, red neon and green Christmas lights, sticky leather booths and popcorn machine included), this is where hardcore locals head for friendly bartenders, potent drinks and a ridiculously eclectic jukebox.
Short Stop

With three separate rooms (including one devoted to pool, another to dancing), this perpetually busy watering hole is where Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Echo Park cool-kids pass themselves off as regular folks, and slumming-it Westsiders try to pass themselves off as Eastsiders.

May the force be with you: Echo Park Avenue's inventive jeweler purveys bling so universally cool, so unbearably badass that everyone from Brad Pitt to Snoop can't resist the charms. (Yeah, that's a 3D ghost ship and gold ghetto blaster around my neck. Now what?)
