Go 'Shrooming: L.A.'s Heartiest Veggies

Updated: November 04, 2008

Gone are the days of canned button mushrooms--today's cultivated varieties give menus the heartiness they deserve. From The Hall's piggy-licious pied topped with mushroom gravy to Andiamo's funghi pizza, there has been, well ... a mushroom effect all over Los Angeles.

A Fungus Among Us

Because vegetarians already have scores of options anyway: Holloway's posh standout has topped off its fall menu with the "pied de cochon," or pig's foot, wrapped around veal sweetbreads and glazed with a savory mushroom gravy. Um, yeah. This is one for your carnivorous crew.

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Patina Restaurant

L.A.'s landmark downtown restaurant's "Mushroom Month" may be over, but the Patina Group's call for Angeleno foodies to "look beyond the truffle" still stands. Dine on turbot with baked butternut squash, porcini mushrooms, russet apples and lobster butter. Now that's a fancy fall cornucopia.

  3. 3 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Tinto

Small plates are still huge in the City of Angels, so settle in at WeHo's shiny tapas spot for mixed wild mushrooms and squid with a nice portion of fava beans. Just try not to think of Anthony Hopkins when you envision that last part.

  4. 4 4 Star Rating: Recommended Taste on Melrose

One of the city's most charming brunch spots also offers a stellar way to combine autumn delights. Think cremini mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, carrots and shallots in white truffle oil. Then get over there for a taste.

  5. 5 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Melisse Restaurant

1104 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401 (map)

While Wilshire's destination Frenchie--two Michelin stars ain't too shabby--is, of course, serving trendy seasonable white truffles, all four of Josiah Citrin's "classic" entrees incorporate 'shrooms: Dover sole with king oyster mushrooms, Jidori chicken with chanterelle mushrooms, roasted beef with wild mushrooms and rotisserie chicken with morel mushrooms. Bon appetit!
