Lords of Dogtown: Where Dogs Play in L.A.

Updated: February 15, 2008

We recently sniffed out the canine scene to find out where some of L.A.'s top pooches like to hang out when they're not in the doghouse. Here's what they had to say ...

?While not my #1 favorite attraction in L.A.--that honor is reserved for any merchant who carries the creamy deliciousness that is St. Agur blue cheese--the Griffith Park Southern Railroad is by far my preferred non-gastronomic place to visit. Established in 1948, this wonderful miniature railroad allows locomotive enthusiasts of any age and, most significantly, any number of legs, to ride along the mile-plus track as it meanders through lush green meadows, an Old West town and the lovingly modeled Native American village. A triumph!?

?Whoever named this place was really, really dumb because I?ve never seen a cat here and the only thing close to a fiddle that I?ve heard is my sister Ruby J. Moritz playing her butt trumpet. What they do have is a pretty yum Fish & Chips and nobody hassles us if we hang out with mom and dad in the big open patio. Sadly, inside is off limits so that?s why I?m saving up for a trip to The Cat & Fiddle in Exeter, UK, where according to Ruby?s interwebs, they?ll let us join the party in the pub!?

Beyonce - American Pit Bull Terrier

"Some people say I look mean, but that?s just pitiful. I love going for walks and sniffing around for action, but even more than that, I just love sitting down in a shaded spot and enjoying tasty treats. That's why Chile Y Limon is one of my favorite places--the married couple who own it always give me a plastic bowl of water just right outside the door and sometimes I even get a little treat, like vanilla ice cream. Delicioso!"

Penny - American Pit Bull Terrier

Pierre - French Bulldog

  1. 4 4 Star Rating: Recommended Il Sole

8741 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069 (map)

"I love walking by all the restaurants on Sunset Plaza. My thing is staring. I like to find a spot on the ground next to people and just stare at them. I can do that all day long. I especially like Il Sole?I've got pretty high-end taste and that spot is great for watching people. Some of them are even famous."

Mr. Chips - Beagle/Coyote Mix

"I'm a rescue and totally street. Yep, that's right. I like crashing house parties in Echo Park or catching a show and slurping some BBQ at downtown's Little Radio."

Sontag - Parson Russell Terrier

  1. 6 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Peet's Coffee & Tea

8833 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 (map)

"I've lived all over the world ? New York, Paris and now L.A., which really is quite nice. Aside from running in the garden and chasing squirrels, I like Peet's for my morning ritual. My owner likes the strong coffee and I like the sidewalk action. There's always a group of fellow canines hanging out around the outdoor tables. But I don't sit on the sidewalk--I prefer sitting on a chair next to my owner, which always seems to make people laugh."

Hank - Red Bone Coon Hound

  1. 7 4 Star Rating: Recommended La Conversation

638 N Doheny Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90069 (map)

"I'm a dog about town. I like going into shops, playing at Runyon Canyon and meeting friends at Mulholland Dog Park, but I really love La Conversation. I mean, who wouldn't love that place? It looks really cozy inside, but since dogs aren't allowed in, I stay near my owner at the sidewalk tables. Which is really the perfect spot anyway since I'm so big--I have plenty of space to stretch. And when I get leftovers I'm the happiest dog in the world."

Ollie - Daschund

  1. 8 Palisades Park

851 Alma Real Dr, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272 (map)

"I may look fat for a dachshund, but it's mostly fur. When I'm not lying on the couch, peeing in the house or cuddling with my owner, my favorite thing to do is just walk around the Palisades dog park and beach. The scenery is hard to beat, the vibe is very easygoing and I rarely run into any dogs with attitude."

Rascal - Shepard/Husky mix

  1. 9 4 Star Rating: Recommended Caffe Primo

8590 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 (map)

"I'm a rescue from Downtown L.A., so I know a good thing when I've got it. I enjoy relaxing at the outdoor tables with my owner at Caffe Primo on Sunset. Everyone's friendly and I get my own cup of water. Plus, I like to watch all the beautiful people walking by."

Billy - Vizsla

  1. 10 4 Star Rating: Recommended BLD

7450 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 (map)

"My favorite weekend hangout spot is BLD on Beverly. There is always outdoor seating available, with good people watching, and in winter they put some extra heating. The water bowl here is very special--space age design made out of some very cool-tasting plastic--which makes it much more fun to toss around like a toy than drink from it. The staff is always friendly, though I'm always sad when they say they can't touch me due to legal reasons. After a good meal you only have to cross the street to visit Urban Tails, the best little pet shop in Hollywood where I'm a 'member.' And if that's not enough, you can even walk to the Grove from there ... and every dog knows how much crazy stuff goes on at the Grove. Not only lots of kids, but all the stores seem to welcome dogs. Standing in line for Pinkberry, I always make new friends."

Chance - Sheltie/Keeshond Mix
