Editorial Review for Yamashiro – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Yamashiro's spectacular backdrop and grand architecture pleases the crowds. Built in 1911, the grounds are an exact replica of a palace located in the Yamashiro mountains near Kyoto, Japan. The pagoda, koi pond, polished teak and million-dollar views are intoxicating. The menu--featuring specialties in each course--includes twists on Japanese fare like the grilled saffron seafood and tuna encrusted in sesame. Sushi items include tuna, sea urchin and albacore sashimi.

Yamashiro is a rarity in L.A., because it's a pre-1950's building that has actually been appreciated and preserved -- not torn down and rebuilt like the rest of the city. The unique, Japanese-style structure has quite a history (read about it at the Yamashiro restaurant website and take a very cool virtual tour); originally a private mansion, then an exclusive club for the Hollywood elite, and a military academy before becoming the beautiful restaurant it is today. The Hollywood hilltop views are amazing, and (unlike most "view" restaurants) the food is great, too! Every time I've been there, I've had nothing less than excellent service. Despite the Japanese name and architecture, the menu is currently Cal-Asian. I prefer this menu to the all-Japanese menu they had years ago. I like to start out with the crab cakes and tempura shrimp & vegetable appetizers, followed by the filet mignon & lobster. Wonderful! For all of the above reasons, Yamashiro is my first choice for treating my out-of-town guests to a one-of-a-kind, memorable dining experience. So far, everyone I've taken there has loved it.
Pros: Amazing views, ambience, food, and service
Cons: None

I went there on a Wednesday night with my husband and found out that they have a movie night every Wednesday. I asked someone how much it costs and they said it was complimentary. The movie was set up in a separate room off the bar area. After talking to the hostess we found out they where playing Caddyshack (which is totally one of the funniest movies ever) and that there were two showings. We were going to eat before the movie until the hostess said that there are table set up for you to eat during the movie. How fun is that. We went to go have dinner and ending up seeing dinner and a movie. We had so much fun and we ended up hanging at the bar after the movie for some more drinks. This is our new date night location. We have to do it during the week because we both work weekends. The food was really well put together and delicious. I am a Vegetarian so I have the Vegetable and Noodles entree. It came with tofu and was really good. My husband got the Black Angus steak (obviously not a vegetarian) but he said that it was super tasty and came with a truffle polenta that was really good. Overall this restaurant is amazing not only does it have a really good view but the food, service and movie night were amazing. I was super impressed and I do not impress easily.
Pros: Movie Night, Food, Service
Cons: Almost got lost (I think that was more my fault)
