What Our Expert Scouts Say

Mel's Drive-In

Right by some of LA's hottest preformance venues, this is a great throw-back comfort food dinner to get your pre or post performance grub on. Conveniently open 24 hours too, so there's no excuse to not cure that hangover with a milkshake!

When you think back on milk shakes, window trays with waitresses on roller skates, sock hops - this is what you think of. Sure things have changed but this is still a great late night stop for a stroll through old school.

Must go-to-place if you are visiting Hollywood or a local looking for a diner. If you are looking for a diner to go to whether its during the day or late at nite. Come to Mel's. They will take good care of you and your group too. Make sure you bring a cool pair of sunglasses if you want to sit outside. Everyone is a star there.

This '50s-inspired diner is the quintessential Hollywood combination of faux reality and nostalgia.. In Short
Made famous by "American Graffiti," the original Mel's in San Francisco was demolished shortly after filming. This local franchise's decor holds enough retro-chic for even a die-hard Gen-Xer, with blow-up movie stills papering the walls and tabletop jukeboxes pulsing 1950s tunes. Mel's serves some classic diner eats like the Famous Melburger, chili fries, and creamy milk shakes. Club kids, shoppers, couples on dates, and families flock here for a quick and casual meal.

Love it. I love all the Mel's, but this one has particularly good service. Great greasy food perfect for a lunch after a long night of drinking.

great after party hangout. ah, so many a night spent here on the way back from hollywood...i love this place. i feel bad for the servers--the (drunk) people they have to deal with! they give good service, even at 3am. the food is delicious--i love getting breakfast here after dancing or the fruit salad with yogurt if im not very hungry. the shakes are great, even at 3am.

watch the parking on the street--read the signs carefully bc there are plenty of cops around, even at 3am.

Good reliable food on a daily basis. Not your typical diner.. We have seriously eaten at Mel's perhaps more than 100 times. It is very close to where we live and always really easy and reliable. They provide free valet parking, which is nice, and we always just tip the guy a buck.

One great thing: They keep iced coffee and iced decaf in a refrigerator! I know this sounds stupid, but it is a great thing to me. Everywhere else when you order an iced coffee they pour hot coffee over ice, and then you just get luke warm coffee. At Mel's you get GOOD iced coffee that is cold and not watered down!

Great omelettes and sandwiches here as well. My only complaint is that it keeps getting more expensive. It used to cost us about $20 to eat lunch here. Now it seems to always be over $30. But the food is always good and most of the waitstaff are great. Also you can always seat yourself and we have never had to wait for a table.

good people watching. Mel's is in the thick of things and truly open 24 hours, which makes a great spot for people watching. It's usually packed, which can lead to poor service (inattentiveness, long waits, etc.). The food is greasy comfort food, which is what I want late at night or after hours of drinking. It's inexpensive and once your order is finally taken, the food arrives quickly. If you want to sit outside on a chilly evening, there are heat lamps situated outside, which makes seating more comfortable.
