Editorial Review for IHOP – by Robyn Galbos

In Short
The first International House of Pancakes opened in a suburb of Los Angeles in 1958 serving a menu of hearty breakfast favorites. Today the restaurant still serves its signature dishes like the original buttermilk pancakes and pigs in blankets: sausage links wrapped in hotcakes. Other breakfast items include waffles, omelets, French toast and crepes. Non-breakfast offerings include sandwiches, burgers, entree-sized salads, and dinners like T-bone steak, pot roast and herb-roasted chicken.

Know Before You Go

The kids menu has favorites for the 12-and-under crowd like the Funny Face (chocolate chip pancake with a whipped-topping smile), chicken strips with fries and the Silver Five: five silver dollar-sized pancakes served with an egg and bacon.

Like any IHOP, the food is pretty darned good. I love the pancakes. And the chicken fried steak! MMM-mmm. But as with any of these delicious items, watch the portions or your heart and gut will pay you back later. This particular location is a little on the dank side. Windows seem to provide very little sunlight. The staff could use some training too. But as with any restaurant, flavor is king. This IHOP provides the flavor but misses the mark on all other attributes, so I'm calling it average.

Great breakfast but, man, skip the fried chicken. I don't know how anyone could screw up making fried chicken but this IHOP does.

Editor's Review

Breakfast served all day and pancakes served a variety of ways are the hallmarks of this diner-style restaurant.  See the full editorial review.
