Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery

Authentic Mexican food and a warm Texas welcome await you at Mi Tierra.

Open 24 hours a day and festooned with Christmas lights year-round, Mi Tierra Cafe is a little loco and a lot of fun. We've got strolling musicians, a huge selection of Tex-Mex dishes and the coldest beer in the Mercado.

Our magnificent carved oak bar is one of a kind. The bar is well known for its beauty and large selection of imported tequilas, beers and our famous margaritas. It's a genteel oasis in a hurried modern world.

Mi Tierra's bakery has been in operation since 1957, providing traditional Mexican panes dulces (sweetbreads) to a loyal following. Our master baker makes bread daily to insure that the big bakery case is stocked with fresh-out-of-the-oven treats in time for the breakfast rush.

Editorial Review for Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery – by Dawn Pomento

The Scene
Mi Tierra carries the festive atmosphere of El Mercado indoors, with strings of colorful holiday lights that hang from the ceiling year-round. This family-run restaurant is a downtown landmark and tourists inevitably turn up here for Mexican breakfasts. Late-night crowds are made up of locals who know that the restaurant never closes.

The Food
The menu reflects the standard San Antonio Tex-Mex fare: cheese, eggs, beans and lots of it. This may not be the best Mexican food in town, but the tortillas are fresh and overall, it's a respectable introduction for the uninitiated. Don't forget that "bakery" is part of the official name for a reason: Stop by for above-average coffee and a pan dulce, like a delicious pumpkin empanada. Get it to go and stroll through El Mercado.

I AM FROM TEXAS AND HAD HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT THIS PLACE. FINALLY WENT DURING MY HURRICANE IKE EVACUATION. THE PLACE IS HARD TO FIND AND PARKING GOOD LUCK. THE INSIDE WAS NICELY DECORATED VERY NICE. THEIR MENUDO IS VERY GOOD AND SERVED WITH THE EXTRAS THAT ARE VITAL FOR GOOD MENUDO. AS FOR THE REST OF THE FOOD VERY TOURIST ORIENTED TACO BELL TASTING. THE QUESADILLA WAS WEIRD. INSTEAD OF A TORTILLA THEY USE A BREAD LIKE PITA BREAD WITH CHEESE. GREEN ENCHILADAS NO FLAVOR. BEANS ARE DRY OVERCOOKED. AND THEN YOU HAVE LIKE 20 MUSCIANS (TRIO'S GUITAR PLAYERS) WALKING AROUND ASKING OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO SING. COME ON GO AWAY LET ME EAT. WAITER WAS SO BUSY IT TOOK HIM FOREVER TO BRING OUR TICKET. I WENT AND SAW AND WILL NOT RETURN. DI D NOT TASTE THE PAN DULCE BUT LOOKED GOOD.

Pros: NICELY DECORATED MEXICAN THEME

Cons: READ AND YOU WILL FIND OUT

This is a def. must for the San Antonio first timer or any tourist. The Mexican food is great and very authentic. It can get kind of crowded because it's located on the Market Square strip (another must). Service can be questionable sometimes and many of the waiters/staff speak little English, but the food and Mexican decor/atmosphere make up for it. The Mariachi bar is great. The "Top Shelf Margarita" is the best...especially the large, scooner one. It's a little over priced for Mexican food in San Antonio but most of that is because it's a tourist location. Mi Tierra is owned by the same people that own Las Margaritas and Pico De Gallo...also excellent restaurnts. If you want cheap authentic Mexican food, there are tons of other choices in SA...but definitely give this place a try. Oh yeah, they also have a Mexican bakery with tons of pan dulce (spanish for sweet bread). If you're staying the night in SA, then get some bread after dinner to eat with coffee in the morning...I promise you'll get hooked...lol.

Pros: Good taste of Mexica Culture...let the mariachis sing you a song ($10 per song)

Cons: over priced, can get crowded

By day, a respectable place for families and power lunches; by night, the last stop after bars and clubs close.  See the full editorial review.
