Editorial Review for Sweet Lady Jane – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
Zillions stream in and out, snatching up cakes for every occasion. The tiny dining area is done up like a little old lady's tearoom, complete with pink flowery china and doilies.
The Food
It's not easy to score a sugar fix in Los Angeles, where everything is sugar-free and fat-free. With more than 70 layer cakes, cheesecakes, pies and tarts from which to choose, this is the place to indulge in the most sinful sweets. The raspberry-marzipan tart flaunts dense almond paste smothered by ruby raspberry glaze. The cheesecakes are luscious--the cappuccino, spiked with chocolate, is rich, while the hazelnut is feather-light. But what really sets this bakery apart is the kitchen's artistry--the frosting is glassy smooth and piping is always perfect.

The other reviews say service was horrible, maybe they're going at the wrong time. We went for a little afternoon dessert and coffee around 2pm on a Sunday and were greeted as we walked in. Since it was our first time there, the guy behind the counter came around and explained every cake in great detail. We tried the Almond Roca Cake which was fab. I can understand it probably gets crowded during peak hours since its such a tiny little hole in the wall but we had the best time. Can't wait to go back and try every dessert! The're cakes are beautifully decorated too!
Pros: Cakes
Cons: No cons, who doesnt like dessert?

This has been my favorite cake shop for years. Yes, the staff is generally unattentive, often snooty, and sometimes downright rude but occasionally they'll surprise me by being helpful and friendly! In any case, it's the Almond Roca cake that keeps me coming back time and time again - the chocolate ganache is addictive. I've purchased the Almond Roca for several special occasions and have received rave reviews. I've tried many of their other cakes - some good, some average - but nothing compares to the Almond Roca cake. The slices are huge so I think the $7-ish price per slice is justified but I suppose it is still considered pricey relative to other shops. Parking can be challenging but I've been pretty lucky and the shop is small so be prepared to get your cake to go!
Pros: Almond Roca cake is so worth the calories!
Cons: Service
