What People Are Saying About Barney's Beanery

What was once a ratty neighborhood dive frequented by beats, hippies and Jim Morrison is now a ratty neighborhood dive full of sports fans from UCLA. The cavernous interior hides many cozy nooks from which to watch the game. The infamous anti-gay policy was done away with a long time ago, but for a bar in the middle of Boys Town, you'll find a pretty straight crowd. Barney's offers a huge menu of comfort food: 150 different burgers, 65 chilis, 90 omelettes and much more. Also, 50-cent pool games, popular karaoke nights and an excellent happy hour keep the crowds happy. With 50 beers on tap…

- Know Before You Go:
- The huge beer menu can be confusing--if you can't decide, try a sample selection of ales or ciders.

Wouldn't Recommend it.
by Phil Eats LA
Barney's Beanery dooms itself by having too many items on the menu - it's not ideal to boast about the 1,000 items available. No restaurant can do Mexican, American, fusion Japanese, 24-hour breakfast (and more!) well. Despite the huge menu, there's a shockingly small variety to choose from for dessert.
We decided on the most unique-sounding item: chocolate pizza (crispy pizza dough with melted chocolate, topped with sliced strawberries or bananas and powdered sugar).
"No, don't order that, it's terrible," the waiter said after we tried to order. "I don't know why it's on the menu, it's probably the worst thing on there." (This actually happened.)
He then went on to recommend the homemade ice cream sandwich, so we ordered one, along with a slice of apple pie. Both desserts were good, but nothing special, which is a good way to sum up Barney's. Seems like a fun place to get a beer, not to eat.

Great food
by KTSmithy
So I've seen this place enough on t.v. that I thought I would try it. I don't live in LA, so I went there while visiting my sister.
The inside looks exactly as it does on t.v. It's got the whole car motif going. It's not my style, but it's consistent throughout the place. I guess they have multiple locations and I'm assuming the decor is the same throughout all locations.
The food was great. I love chilaquiles and it takes a heavy hand to mess that up. But I think it takes a knowledgeable hand to really make it great. The chilaquiles were near exceptional here. I would give it an 8 out of 10. My sister had the breakfast burrito, which was also very good. So overall very good food, decent price. Worth the trip.
Best chili in town
by killarneyk
I go there for the chili. That's pretty much it. You can have it just about any way you like. Just meat, add beans, guac, sour cream, double up on that cheese. Deeelish. The potatoe skins are nicely done too. The place is a dive, but kind of a nice dive, it's like a deliberately marketable dive. Bar food, but well done bar food.
Best Happy Hour in Town!
by john81
This place is a LA staple and a must for anyone in town visiting.
They have roughly 30 draft beers and run happy hour 4-7pm 7 days a week. They have 1/2 off well drinks and $3 all drafts and 1/2 off selected appetizers.
If you’re going to watch a big game try and get there early.
- Pros: Great Happy Hour & Huge Menu
- Cons: Get's crowded during sports games
Overcharged twice!
by nattyice
I do like this place, however it really annoys me that the last two times I went they put a whole bunch of extra drinks on our tab, thinking that we wouldn't notice them. Last night the waitress added 3 Bud Lights on that we didn't have. When I told her, she was very nice and apologetic, knowing that she had been caught. This isn't the only bar in has overcharged us either. In the past two months This has happened to me 4 times!!! (2 at Barney's, once at Stinkers, in silverlake, and once at the Golden Gopher downtown). It just seems like really shady business, and I think that it may be illegal to charge someone, something they didn't get.
- Pros: Good place to come and get a drink
- Cons: Check your bill!, They stick drinks you didn't have on there
