Used to be good...sort of gone downhill... – I used to eat here more than once a week, but ever since they re-opened after the remodel and everything I haven't been too impressed. The atmosphere and food suffer compared to what it used to be. It was always just a nice, casual place to grab a quick bite, but I don't find myself going unless I have to.
Hugo's is a "No-Goes" for us – I was surprised to read all of these positive reviews. I had breakfast there today and it was absolutely terrible. I had eggs benedict and I've seen and tasted better at a Denny's in the middle of Nebraska. My partner had some sort of tortilla egg scramble which was just indescribably odd, and the potatoes were dry and overcooked. While I'm at it, the coffee was terrible. I eat out a lot in a lot of different cities and countries, and I know good food. Hugo's doesn't have it... Hugo's is a no-goes for me!
Love the Skirt Steak Vera Cruz – Every few weeks, something or someone reminds me of Hugo's and I immediately begin to salivate. Almost invariably when I go to Hugo's in West Hollywood, I'll order the skirt steak vera cruz. It comes with a great dipping sauce with the perfect kick. The side dishes are great too, making for an overall great dinner. Order their strawberry shortcake (when in season) with the sweetened fruit glaze and you'll be in heaven. Generally the place is popular but not usually enough to have a wait. And somehow I always do find parking in back, which is absolutely necessary here in West Hollywood. In a word, a GO.

Beyond Breakfast – Some of the best restaurants in LA are often indicated by how prepared you have to be in advance if you want to get a table. Hugo's is no exception (for breakfast anyway). It's been a neighborhood favorite FOREVER. And it's even better now. More light, airy, and comfortable (i love the booths--very "in crowd"). Food's still great, maybe even better. I was always one to go in for breakfast, but with the fresh dinner and drink menu it makes for a great night spot too. Grab dinner, then go to whatever's next for you that night. I like that I can either eat comfort food (mmmm, mac n cheese) or something more healthy (love the salads!). They lean adventurous without going too far. And they do the muddled fruit & herb drink trend well (can you say Mojito).
Check It Out For Yourself – In conjunction with the comment "thinking twice before you eat at Hugo's," I went to the LA County Health website and looked up the violations myself. The vermin this person spoke of unfortunately are very hard to control. which is why the restaurant was closed, but it never said anything about "prevention of entry," nor did it give exact reasons. It gives examples as to why they were in violation, but doesn't say specifically that they were using unclean untensils. In college, I worked as a server and as gross as it is, most restaurants have to struggle with controlling vermin. I eat at Hugo's regularly and was disappointed that it was closed for close to two months. During that time, they did a complete overhaul and remodel. The place looks great, but I think that it's louder now, which I'm not fond of. I was happy to see the same great menu and many of the same smiling faces. I can also say that I haven't seen a single insect, so I think that they have taken care of that problem.
vegetarian heaven – I am a big fan of Hugo's. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait but it's well worth it. Nice portions of delicious, healthy food. Humongous selection of teas and fresh squeezed juices. My favorite place for breakfast or brunch.
healthy comfort food – hugo's is our favorite neighborhood spot to go to for comfort food. really tasty soups of the day, salads and rolls. both vegan and vegetarian options are available and still have lots of flavor, and we're not vegetarian. we've never had to wait for long because the restaurant seats quite a large number of people and service is brisk.
awesome breakfast, awful service – breakfast/brunch at hugo's rocks, it's definitely one of the best places in l.a.
just one problem - the service here is horrendous with a capital H, so if you're already hungry when you arrive, there's a chance you'll pass out before you even get your food. but if you do manage to get served, it's worth it.
great vegetarian options – this restaurant always delivers--very consistent high quality, healthy and delicious. i love that there are so many excellent meatless items on their menu. overall, the quaint ambiance and comfort-food oriented menu make this place a regular stop.
