The Scene
Andre Balazs, hotelier of Chateau Marmont fame, has turned a former retirement home into the grooviest place to crash on the Strip. Recognizing that cosmopolitan travelers don't always have wallets to match, rates are surprisingly cheap (at least by Hollywood standards)--rooms start at $125. At once retro and cyberspacey, it's as if Carol Brady and Jane Jetson teamed up to design their dream hotel (think cobalt blue AstroTurf and ridiculous upside-down signage). The reception-area DJ and "conversation pit"--a corner of the lobby that's carpeted from floor to ceiling in white shag and furnished with low-slung sectionals--make for a cool place to loiter. A mural of Joshua Tree National Park surrounds another lounge area. An almost-naked model-turned-performance artist lies in a glass display case behind the front desk, and swinging acrylic bubble chairs hang in the foyer, leading to the 24-hour diner.

tried to hit-up their 4th of july pool-side bbq that was publicized on citysearch. tried to get in but staff said it was for guests only. wouldn't have minded as much if it wasn't for the staff being uptight and pretentious about it.

My friends and I tried to go to the 4th of July event at the Standard suggested on Citysearch. We found ourselves turned away from the door because it was a private party. If there was a guest list the Citysearch article should have mentioned it. Since the girl did not have a guest list and did not ask us what our names were to see if we were on the list i found this hard to believe. My friends and I happily left but not without mentioning the Citysearch article, to which the staff replied that they had never heard of the site. Overall, it was an insulting experience and my interest in hanging out at that place has greatly decreased.

this standard hotel is okay. I think the one downtown is a lot nicer and the bar area is better because it is on the rooftop.

The Extras:
Non-hotel guests from all over the city drop in for an affordable cut at Rudy's. It's just like your corner barbershop, if your corner barbershop had customers like Matt Dillon and offered tattoos.
Know Before You Go:
Keep in mind that rooms facing the Sunset Strip tend to get a little noisy on Friday and Saturday nights, thanks to the boulevard's hectic nightlife scene. But then most guests of The Standard are here to party anyway.
Look Good:
On the weekends, they require a 2-night minimum.
