BMW Owners BEWARE

by ajkharley at Citysearch

On 6/23/08, we took our BMW to check a ticking sound at our local ?BMW specialist shop, L.A. Meister. The mechanic told us that ?it was coming from the timing chain,? and that unless immediately replaced; the whole thing would soon be a wreck. He said we had to leave the car right away and that it would take him 5 days to complete the job. His assessment of the problem was quite surprising as the car had been running in impeccable condition and was only about 54K miles.

After a number of visits, a whole month having elapsed, and our car being taken hostage, our level of anxiety obviously increased. Finally, on 7/21, my husband went to the shop and after demanding a reasonable explanation; he was insulted and yelled at by the manager, Mike Csaky.

Much to our surprise, we learned that the shop had decided to perform additional jobs on it that were never agreed upon, including some that were specifically rejected by my husband. He was not allowed to test drive the car, and he was warned that he would not be allowed to pay by credit card ?which would at least give us some kind of protection against these crooks?and he was kicked out of the premises in a totally disrespectful manner, while being screamed and insulted by the manager, Mr. Csaky, in front of all his employees.

At this point, we had to bite the crude reality that like most unscrupulous repair shops, this one preys on?and profits from?the fact that relatively few drivers have a clue about what's under the hood, let alone how to fix it.

Finally, after a whole month had gone by, on 7/22 my husband was able to pick up the car after being set back a total of $3,533.00. The shop only accepted payment in the form of a check.

He drove away in the car only to realize that the ticking noise was still there, exactly as it was at the time the car was taken in.

  • Pros: Looks very professional... BUT
  • Cons: Turned out to be a total fraud and unprofessional!!
