In Short – The first U.S. branch of the YMCA started in Boston in 1851; there are now more than 2,500 locations nationwide, making it the country's largest nonprofit community service program. Each YMCA reflects the community it's in, offering differing services based on the area. Most include fitness areas with aerobic equipment, classes and racquetball and tennis courts. Many also have day care and after-school programs, as well as summer day camps.
Not a gym!! Pretense for their charitable
by josecitos_girl at Citysearch
After 19 years, I left. The mgmt changed 10 years ago and it's a ruin. I'm an aerobics fanatic and there are almost no classes now, the teachers are unqualified, the subs are worse. No hotline, no reliable schedule. They hire anyone willing to accept the below-market abysmally low fee the Y pays them! No manager supervises if the instructors perform to standard, or show up on time ? if at all! Plus, the A/C is NEVER on, so be prepared for over 100 degrees in the "aerobics" room. (In quotes because there is virtually no aerobics in the so-called "aerobics" room.)
Every week, there are big signs posted advertising (yet again) positions open! From membership director to counter clerks (we see new faces every month -- what does that tell you?) And weekly, members receive a "shakedown" brochure hitting the member up for donations to their latest charitable campaign. One senses that one is paying an obscenely overpriced membership fee simply to be a mark on their database.
Join Golds on Figueroa. I did. A serious gym, 5-star instructors, free parking, friendly staff, friendly members, half the price of the Y, no negativity, no donation shakedowns
- Pros: Nice views from their many windows
- Cons: NOT a gym -- a charitable foundation that uses "members" for their "shakedown database."
Bad policy

I called to put my account on 'suspension' due a terrible accident I have been in and won't be able to go to the gym for a couple of months. I was told they will still charge me $10 a month to hold my account. For what? As a member for two years I would think that is service they would offer to members to accommidate life circumstances beyond my control. What happened to customer service??
Convenient Location, but unhelpful employees
by john_m_dykstra at Citysearch
I joined the YMCA because it was across the street from my work in Downtown. The fitness room is pretty big. Not cheap at $58 per month plus $150 initiation fee. I agree with the other reviewer and say that the employees at the Y really don't care too much about the members.
Also, be careful. I hear there are people stealing things in the locker room. I heard that a someone clipped off a member's lock with a lock clipper! Not good. I'm probably going to quit and join another gym soon.
- Pros: Location, Big Facility
- Cons: Unhelpful Staff and Security Issues
