What People Are Saying About Hilton Checkers Los Angeles

Discreetly located in the back of the boutique-style Hilton Checkers Los Angeles hotel, this clubby, candlelit room hosts solo diners, area residents and business executives. Completely revamped in late 2009, the quiet space seems to have embraced its "secret find" sensibility with mellow tones, comfortable leather chairs and framed black-and-white photographs of the historic property, which dates back to the 1920s. Chef Todd Allison, who was classically trained by celebrated Chef James Boyce for over 10 years and also worked directly with Michael Mina, has crafted an impressive…
Editor's Tips
- When To Go:
- For a more leisurely meal, and more attentive service, avoid the pre-theater rush.
- Save Time:
- The restaurant offers theater-goers complimentary town car service to and from downtown venues.
- The Extras:
- For a post-dinner constitutional or after-theater nightcap, take the elevator to the hotel's penthouse level, where there are comfy poolside lounge chairs and spectacular city views.

A hotel restaurant that is greater than the hotel
by DianaTakesaBite
I was expecting to hate it. Expecting it to be like many of the other hotel restaurants I've encountered -- a last resort dining destination for trapped hotel guests. As it is, one would be lucky to be a guest trapped inside Checkers restaurant at the Hilton in Downtown LA. Chef Todd Allison has crafted a precise Cal-French influenced menu that is easy to love -- whether it's seared ahi tuna, sea scallops with blood oranges, short ribs and risotto, or filet with macerated tomatoes and grilled romaine. As an added perk, the restaurant hosts a special happy hour event every Thursday night that features four speciality drinks paired with four dishes. It's more than worth checking out. Even if it requires rubbing elbows with some out-of-towners.
- Pros: Seasonal menu, Thursday night happy hour, service
Fantastic at all levels

What a discovery. Terrific food, creatively presented, service beyond expectation. We each had the 3-course menu. Some of our choices: Saffran risotto of rock shrimp and chorizo (beautiful textures, creamy but not overly rich). Mixed greens with pears, figs, blue cheese, pecans (separated on a wide plate, a fun way to eat salad). Roasted duck breast with chanterelles. And a fantastic creme brulée and flourless chocolate cake to finish. Amazingly, $35 per person. Service: We had only an hour before a concert, and they not only took care of us quickly but also took us to the concert hall with the hotel shuttle and picked us up! Also, valet parking is only $6.
- Pros: Creative food, top service
- Cons: Wines by the glass a little expensive
Great Dining Experience
by gerryjim
Our dinner was the prix fixe dineLa dinner. Three courses for $34. My Caesar Salad was good and my wild salmon with a butter sauce on the side was excellent. The beef tenderloin had a fantastic wine reduction sauce. The third course was a flourless chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream in the middle. It was very good. In all fairness the martinis were a little weak. Service was good and the restaurant was quiet. It was a Monday night however.
- Pros: valet parking is $6 with dinner
great food, puzzling service
by wicktor
We arrived at Checkers at 6 pm and expected to get out for 8 pm at the Music Center, and we were assured that would be no problem. Well there was a problem. After drinks we waited 45 minutes for someone to take our order! Not impressive. The food however was impressive, the salads crunchy and full of delicious surprises. The ahi tuna with avocado and tomatoes was perfect with just enough pepper to wake up the tastebuds. The monkfish was also perfect, even though the accompanying risotto contained some rice grains that were just a little too much al dente. I would have loved to try the desserts, but by the time we finally got our coffees, it was time to leave for the Music Center. I will definitely return for the food, but beware of timing for the Music Center.
