What People Are Saying About Xian

In Short – Just two blocks from famed Rodeo Drive, this is a prime spot to catch SoCal's beautiful people as they stroll by with armloads of shopping bags. Inside, green tile floors complement blond-wood walls, and an '80s pop soundtrack sets an upbeat vibe. Szechuan calamari is sauteed with shafts of celery in a black bean sauce, and pot stickers are stuffed with diced mushrooms, tofu and spinach. –

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
You can make an afternoon of it and window-shop the couture offerings of nearby Rodeo Drive.
ambiance
100.0% positive
 1. The service is good, the food is presented nicely, the decorations are modern- or at least, more modern than the typical pink table cloths and plastic chairs.
 2. Great food, nice ambience, fabulous company!
 3. The best Chinese food in the area is Shanghai Grill, on Wilshire and Canon, even if the atmosphere is too subdued, quiet, and sometimes geriatric.
 4. Have eaten here several times and love the decor, the service is excellent (hats off to Mao for making me always feel special), and the food is always fresh, clean and flavorful.
 5. great ambiance.

 1. Our server Tao was amazing and so attentive, the lychee martinis divine and the food GREAT!
 2. The service is good, the food is presented nicely, the decorations are modern- or at least, more modern than the typical pink table cloths and plastic chairs.
 3. The food is fresh and tasty--and you can order it any way you like (get the dumplings steamed instead of fried).
 4. That being said, if I felt like Chinese food and wanted somewhere classy/fancy, in a nice neighborhood, this is a good choice.
 5. The healthy "treasure from the sea" with scallops and shrimp is always my first choice for delicious food.
 6. It's hard to find Chinese food in an upscale setting like this - plus the food is actually very good!
 7. The best Chinese food in the area is Shanghai Grill, on Wilshire and Canon, even if the atmosphere is too subdued, quiet, and sometimes geriatric.
 8. Excellent - good value, delicious food.
 9. My salads have been fresh and the chicken tender.
 10. ate hot and sour soup (I have had better--not spicy and not sour); a spring roll (tough to mess those up), and the crispy shrimp (very tasty).
 11. Xian is surprisingly fresh tasting Chinese Food!
 12. With enticing vegetarian options, I wanted to order 5 or 6 things (I settled on an amazing vermicelli dish)!
 13. Popcorn shrimp is one of my favorites - lights, crisp and not too sweet, the soups are wonderful and pretty much everything I've had has been great!
 14. This is a nice alternative to find great local Chinese food (Beverly Hills, West Hollywood) with a very pleasant setting versus having to go all the way to Monterey Park).
 15. Have eaten here several times and love the decor, the service is excellent (hats off to Mao for making me always feel special), and the food is always fresh, clean and flavorful.
 16. Our waiter was friendly and recommended a special beef tenderloin that was not on the menu.
 17. Great food, nice ambience, fabulous company!
 18. The food is amazing and healthy.
 19. Xi'an is a wonderful chinese restaurant where the service is good and the food delicious.
 20. has the best black bean chicken and peppered chicken i have ever had.
 21. this is third visit, dreadful food- -orange chicken has no Orange and like shoe leather.
 22. The meal was pretty good--i have had better but it was not bad.
 23. Not as greasy or oily, which lends to fuller, more fresh tasting dish.

Unfriendly Waiters / Good food

by Mrs Lawson

Xian has good food but lately with the recession the portions are getting smaller and smaller and the prices are going up. The unfriendly waiters are a bit lazy and they

never take away dishes unless you pick them up yourself and hand it to them. Still the food is always tasty.

Expensive for Chinese Food, but a Decent Place

by EconomicArmageddon

I'm always skeptical of Chinese restaurants with no Chinese people in them.

There are so many Chinese restaurants in LA and the greater LA area, that are much cheaper, more authentic, and have better food. It's hard for me to stomach paying $15 for a plate of orange chicken (not that I would ever eat orange chicken....).

That being said, if I felt like Chinese food and wanted somewhere classy/fancy, in a nice neighborhood, this is a good choice. The service is good, the food is presented nicely, the decorations are modern- or at least, more modern than the typical pink table cloths and plastic chairs.

Okay, but better nearby

by mugwump

Having lived in the 'hood for nearly 15 years, I'm always surprised when visitors want to go here for BH chinese. It's certainly a fun atmosphere, so that is worth it, but the food is overly oily and immediately forgettable. The best Chinese food in the area is Shanghai Grill, on Wilshire and Canon, even if the atmosphere is too subdued, quiet, and sometimes geriatric. There is also some serviceable take out at Chef Ming's on Olympic, though Shanghai Grill is far better quality and worth the higher price.

What a great place! Our server Tao was amazing and so attentive, the lychee martinis divine and the food GREAT! From the potstickers, the scallion pancakes, vegetable roll, Crackerjack shrimp and cod. How did it take me so long to find it? I will be going back soon!

 • Pros: Food, service, drinks
 • Cons: none!
