In Short – A crisp white entryway, French-inspired decor and bougainvillea-lined terrace create an oasis for A-listers in this sunny, third-story salon. Beyond haircare, beautification services include massage, facials, eyebrow shaping, waxing, makeup application and even laser hair removal. The French master makes an appearance at his West Coast flagship about once a month for cuts that start at a whopping $750. For considerably less dough, salon-goers can stock up on Fekkai's extensive line of haircare products.

Expensive does not equal skilled

by fairylights at Citysearch

I came here to get ready for my first Hollywood premiere: SpiderMan 2. I couldn't wait to strut down the red carpet in my gown with my hair done by the most famous salon in the world. I wished for a night to remember. I was always told to be careful for what you wish for, but I never knew how right that was until the day I stepped into this salon. I got my night to remember all right, but it sure didn't turn out the way I hoped.

I thought, like the reviewer below me, that by picking the priciest, most famous salon I could, I'd be styled by the most skilled stylist in L.A. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that price doesn't equal skill. My hairdresser didn't listen to me, didn't do my hair the way I wanted & used so much product that my hair felt sticky & gross. I looked like something out of a bad 1980s teen movie. I have naturally stick-straight hair that is difficult to curl, but my regular hairdresser not only manages to curl it, she doesn't use any hairspray & the curls hold until shampooed. When I leave her chair, my hair is always soft, silky & light & I look and feel like a princess. That is what I wanted to feel like for my big night. But within an hour of leaving the salon, the hairspray was dripping into my eyes & making my mascara run, my curls had fallen & my hair was a globby mess. I looked more like a coked-out celebuslut with raccoon eyes caught leaving a bar at 5 am than I did a princess. Imagine my devastation when I realized I only had an hour to fix this mess. So much for my vision of a cascade of Jessica Simpson-esque curls.

Do yourself a favor. The next time you're looking for a stylist don't make the same mistake I (& the reviewer below me) did. Don't assume that an expensive haircut means a skilled stylist. Do your research before letting a hack in a smock get near your hair. Visit the salon before your appt. and watch how others react to how the stylist did their hair. See if you like his work yourself. You'll be glad you did.

  • Pros: Elegant setting, people-watching
  • Cons: Low-skill, sky-high prices, pushy salespeople trying to sell products

Don't make the same mistake that I did.

by ipedraza at Citysearch

This is my first time doing this, but I felt compelled to do so after walking by the mirror yet again in disbelief at how awful my haircut is. Although they are expensive, I figured that the stylists here must know a thing or two about hair, and would know how to bring out a great look for me. Didn't happen. Although I had explained what I was looking for, my hair ended up much shorter than I wanted. And the stylist didn't listen when I said that I part my hair on the side, so my hair looks lopsided now when I try to style it. Worst of all, I wanted playful bangs that were just above my eyebrows, but they were cut so short that I keep getting asked if I cut them myself. And they seem out of place with the rest of my hair. I ended up paying $175 for a haircut that makes me look awful and is so far from what I wanted. Don't make the same mistake that I did and think that more expensive means better skilled. I've learned my lesson, the hard way.
