Editorial Review for New Beverly Cinema – by Peter Geiberger
In Short
For more than thirty years the New Beverly Cinema has been running months- and years-old movies for appreciative crowds. Drawing on LA's understandably large cinema community, the theater books it's entire calendar based on requests. Showing fifteen double features a month, there are usually three or four showings of each movie over a two-day engagement. Films range from recent independents to decades-old classics.

On one of my first weekend in LA, I came to the New Beverly and saw "Mullholland Dr." The movie and the New Beverly reminded me of the quirky, funky, and above all interesting side of Los Angeles that gets left out of most views on the city. The theater is pretty ragged on the inside, but the popcorn is cheap, the movie selection is always intriguing, and the company is, like LA, quirky, funky, and interesting. Not everything in this city has to be polished to a shine. The experience wouldn't be the same if the theater was new, the sound was digital quality, and the clientelle wore Prada...
Pros: Great movies, inexpensive
Cons: no parking

This theater always has a very exciting arrangment of films. I saw "Goodfellas" and "Some Like it Hot" here just to name a few. Even so, this theater is not a fun place to visit. It's often very dirty. The walls, which some people said have "character", to me only look like they need a scrub down. The clientelle consists of creepy old men and bag ladies. The video and audio are absolutely terrible. Video can be fuzzy and audio can go in and out. Not to mention on more then one occasion there was a loud buzzing sound behind the audio. I know the owner tries his best, and I'm in full suppport. I'd recommend at least trying this place out...before it's gone.
Pros: Movie Lineup
Cons: Picture, Audio, Ambience
