What Our Expert Scouts Say

The Hollywood Bowl
March 13, 2013

This is a must-do in the summer for Angelenos and visitors alike. I don't care what's playing. Just pack and picnic and go. Extra pro tip: since it's a state park, it's open and free during the day to sit, read and explore.

As a native Angeleno I can say that the Hollywood Bowl is one of my favorite things in LA. Scenic, fun, great for a group or a romantic date. I love packing a picnic and listening to live music under the stars!

While the perfect concert venue, the Bowl is also incredible for Opera and live theatre! I've seen Ray Charles, La Philharmonic, Jason Mraz, and more perform here and it's always an experience worth having.

Best place to spend the summer in LA. Live music under the stars, bring in all the booze and alcohol you want. Buy tix at box office to save $$$.

I defy you to find a better place to see a concert in Los Angeles. The scenery is beautiful, the BYOB policy is outstanding and I've never seen a show where the musicians aren't giving it their all because they're so excited to play here.

Tips for The Hollywood Bowl

Music Under The Stars. This is not only a fantastic music venue, but one of my favorite places in Los Angeles! There isn't a bad seat in the house. I enjoy going early and picnicing with friends before the music starts. When artists perform at the Hollywood Bowl they often change up their typical show by performing a song live for the first time or inviting special guests. Buy tickets now so you can enjoy this fantastic outdoor venue.

Citysearch Editorial Review. What started out in 1922 as a fleet of wooden benches along the hills of Hollywood's Bolton Canyon has since grown into LA's most beloved outdoor venue. Everyone from the Beatles and Frank Sinatra to Luciano Pavarotti and Radiohead has taken the instantly recognizable, arched shell stage. Through the years, the shell has gone through many changes from big names in the architectural world, including Lloyd Wright, eldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright, and Frank Gehry. In the summer, the Bowl becomes home to the LA Philharmonic, which lures in crowds with its shows under the stars. Special events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular and the Playboy Jazz Festival round out the summer lineup. Pre-concert picnicking on the hills surrounding the Bowl has become a tradition with tables available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your own spread or have the Patina Group prepare a meal served right in your box near the stage ... if you have box seats, that is.

Patina is the restaurant corporation, not the entertainment!. At the Hollywood Bowl this past Saturday for the fireworks, Philharmonic, and Fogerty (how's that for alliteration?). Fabulous night, but we made the mistake of not bringing in our own food -- thought we'd rely on Patina for our picnic. Walking into the cafe, immediately blasted with the smell of disinfectant (oh, yum). Then the offerings were both minimal and pricey. I got 6 pieces of spicy tuna sushi, 3 strawberries, and 1/2 handful of mixed berries: $22.50. Worse than that: the sushi wasn't fresh, though I'll grant that the berries were ripe.

An Iconic Venue. The Hollywood Bowl is a true Los Angeles landmark. The architecture alone has made it a definitive symbol of the city. It has been featured in countless films and even in a legendary animated Looney Tunes feature with a certain Warner Bros cartoon rabbit. I recently saw John Williams conduct the L.A. Philharmonic as they did pieces from the various film scores of John Williams. It was such a great experience. The way to go is to pack some snacks and some wine and have yourself a picnic as you enjoy some beautiful music. Just know that certain concerts do not allow food so make sure to check the Hollywood Bowl's website for their individual show policies.

There couldn't be a better place to watch a show!. With the fresh mountain air and valley breeze, lush greenery surrounding the seating area, and the Hollywood sign as a backdrop, I don't think there is a better place to watch a show. The seating is so spacious, you can usually sit a litle closer since it's benches. I love the fact that you can bring food and wine from the outside, it's great. I've been to the Reggae Fest at the Bowl the last 2 years. and I plan to go again this year! I also had the honor of seeing the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown perform there (AMAZING!!! R.I.P.) It's so much fun, perfect for a date, or with friends, great acoustics and lighting, and if it's been parodied on "The Simpsons", you know it's good!

an LA experience. The best thing to do here is to get the cheap seats in the very back, and bring a fancy picnic like everyone else. A lot of people leave during intermission so sometimes you can sneak down to the better seats, though now that they have the video screens it's not so bad to be far away.

Editorial Review. Hollywood Bowl's on-site catering service includes separate pre-ordered box dishes, marketplace, outdoor restaurant and counter service pre-package foods.

Best venue in LA. I've seen everything from Rock to Classical here, it was all fantastic. There is nothing better than to sit outside under the stars on a warm summer evening enjoying your favorite music. For those who haven't been to the Bowl I can best equate it to movies in the park during the summer.

You can bring your dinner, picnic style, along with a nice bottle of wine to enjoy before the concert begins.

Historic. Always good to catch a concert at this LA landmark. The different summer series offers great shows. John Williams conducting his movie scores with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Lots of Jazz and Classical performances. I can't wait for The Who at the beginning of July (my favorite band). Just wish John Cleese would be walking around the audience shouting "Albatross" (see Month Python at the Hollywood Bowl).
