Editorial Review for The Avalon – by Tara de Lis
The Scene
First opened in 1927, this classic Hollywood venue has played host to everything from Judy Garland television specials to the Beastie Boys. Extensive renovations and posh additions have brought the art deco landmark into the 21st century--think minimalist, modern decor; an outdoor smoking lounge with its own bar; an entirely new upper lounge built over the existing balcony; reserved seating; and a private club-within-a-club called the Spider. The impresarios behind the venture are a pair of ex-East Coasters with a string of successes, including the Limelight and Tunnel in New York, and Axis and Embassy in Boston.
The Draw
Though the Palace had been looking pretty shabby, the renovation of its classic art deco design, versatile stage accommodations and legendary Hollywood and Vine location mean that it's a must for live music fans, clubgoers--and the A-list.

As far as nightclubs go, Avalon seems like a joke to me. The long lines out front are decieving: this place is anything but glamorous. The staff is rude, the cover is typically pretty high, drinks are expensive. The smoking patio is an alley that smells like urine and smoke and the dance floor is small. The bathroom lines take forever, only to be hasseled by agressive bathroom attendants. Plus the crowd is kind of nasty: everyone is f&%*d up on something, older or some gross but perhaps mildly amusing combination of the two. I do not know why so many people put up with this place every week. I have given the Avalon several chances and have left disappointed each time. I suggest Circus if you are looking for electronica music.
Pros: You can find free street parking if you know where to go
Cons: Rude staff, no atmosphere, lame crowd, small dancefloor just to name a few

I mean, It costs around 25 bucks to get in, the music is good, the club is a nice location and space, and the people are old (40s) and ugly. I have a good time but its not anything amazing. There is an upstairs room that is much better then the main dance floor.
Pros: The club & music
Cons: The people!
