Hand-built of local river rock between 1898 and 1910, the home of eccentric Western writer/historian Charles Fletcher Lummis is a unique example of homegrown regional architecture. - Lummis was a social butterfly who often hosted meetings of a bohemian drinking club, the March Hares, in his home. El Alisal, which means "Place of the Sycamores," was perfect for their revels, as its stone construction made it easy to hose out the rooms after the guests had toddled home.
