The Background – Founded in 1797 by Father Fermin Lasuen and named for Ferdinand III--a saintly, 13th-century Spanish king--this church is one of California's oldest two-story adobe missions. Built to spread the Catholic faith to the indigenous Indians, the mission now displays artifacts of its converts' efforts at blacksmithing, brick-making and weaving.
