Editorial Review for Mother Lode – by Dylan Wilcox
The Scene
Just around the corner from WeHo's hottest clubs, Mother Lode is the antidote to the trendier side of L.A.'s gay scene. A true dive, what it lacks in glamour it compensates with cheap drinks and a no-nonsense attitude. The space is multilevel, with two bars, a pool table and the only pinball machines on the boulevard. Wall-to-wall mirrors facilitate people watching, though high ceilings and wood paneling sometimes make it feel more like a barn than a bar.
The Draw
Cheap drinking is the main objective here: Guys fill up on alcohol before hitting the dance clubs--or hitting on each other. At any given time, there is sure to be a laid-back crowd drinking beer and shooting pool. Beer on tap is terribly cheap on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Motherlode has left itself in the past. Surprisingly it managed to weather the slow days, and witnessed a number of neighbors come and go (especially down at the cursed corner location). The bar maintains the old style side-bar with big mirrors look. Pool can be played on the opposite side. And the TINY outdoor area (not really outdoors) are best left to the smokers. But the old feel leads to some of the friendlier patrons in the neighborhood. And it's making it's comeback as a good time watering hole in this day of other-than-drinking partiers. Go on in.

I was always skiddish about going to this bar because it seems like an older man's bar, which in some ways it is. The bottom line of this bar is come with cash and order two Long Islands ($8 each) and you're drunk for the night. I really like this bar. Charlie the bartender is awesome. The Karaoke is pretty fun as well. Some of the Weho Divas come out during the Thurs or Sun karaoke nights, but just ignore them and eventually they go away. The crowd is pretty cool, but if you're young like me, try not to smile too much otherwise you'll have older guys all over you. Unless that's your thing, then you've found your bar! The only thing negative I can say about this bar, and this is a stretch, is that sometimes their drinks are TOO strong. I remember not being able to finish a screwdriver, but still getting drunk off the bit I drank. So I guess I got my money's worth that night. Definitely check out this bar. You'll save a bunch of money.
Pros: CHEAP STRONG drinks, fun karaoke, Charlie the bartender.
Cons: none, unless you don't like strong drinks.
