Editorial Review for Skybar – by Lilla Zuckerman

The Scene
At night, the illuminated pool area of the modernist Mondrian hotel transforms into a white-hot cocktail party, complete with oversized futons, expensive cocktails and sarong-clad servers. Getting past the notorious bouncer can be difficult, but once inside, the crowd revels in the panoramic view of L.A., sleek and modern decor and incredible people-watching. A covered thatched hut above the pool deck serves as the main bar and casts a golden glow on the scene.

The Draw
Don't come here for the cocktails, which are served in plastic ware, or the service, which is indifferent at best. This is a place to see and be seen, and the rare hot spot where people are just as comfortable in designer jeans as a Roberto Cavalli dress. It's also a great date spot--nothing like drinking under the stars while cuddling on a big mattress to put lovers in the mood.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

How to get in: Call ahead and drop industry connections; book a room at the Mondrian, which includes four spots on the list; dine at Asia de Cuba and migrate; or show up before the doorman--he doesn't appear until 8pm.

Parking

Park in a nearby pay lot or cab it to avoid the expensive and slow valet.

Look Good

The scene is lively on summer days--some people discreetly slip in to swim, lounge and drink.

My brother and his fiancé came down to LA from Ohio for a weekend visit. They wanted to go to a nice Hollywood hot spot. I personally go to Hollywood every weekend with my friends. We have been to almost all of the hot spots in Hollywood. The reason I didn't say "Been to ALL hotspots" is because we have a few favorite spots that we usually go to every weekend, and so I’ve never been to Sky Bar. My other brother was there before and recommended for us to go there. We go there early, at around 8pm. We were just lounging around, conversating and looking at the beautiful views. We all were laughing, talking, taking pictures, just having a great time. Now I admit we were a little loud. Then at 11:30pm we ordered our FIRST, I repeat, OUR FIRST round of drinks. After the drinks my female cousin and I were walking down the stairs to go the restroom. As we were walking another Sky Bar patron accidentally bumped into me, causing my glasses to drop. My cousin bent down and picked up the glasses for me. As soon as she did that a SkyBar security came up to us and said "You guys are too intoxicated, and I would have to ask you to leave" I was like "WHAT? I only had one drink" and I explained what had just happened and his reply was, "I don’t give a F***, we have the right to kick anyone out" then he Violently grabbed me and my cousin and kicked us out of SkyBar. Then the manager came out to talk to us. She was even ruder than the security. She said that she was observing us the whole night and that we were intoxicated. I told her that if she did "OBSERVE" us the whole night then she should know how many drinks we had. WE HAD ONLY ONE!!! She then said "I saw your group with that African lady and you did look intoxicated" then I replied "Who the hell is African? Just because she's black she's automatically AFRICAN?? She’s American you A**hole" then she just shook her head and walked away. This was the most ridiculous place I’ve been to. If you're not white DONT GO THERE

Pros: Views

Cons: Service, Security, the Manager, Price of Drinks(just like any other spot in hollywood)

My boyfriend and I do not typically go out to the strip for an evening out, for various reasons...however a Skybar employee recently offered us a $300 evening out on them, if we would trade for some cakes from the place we work. Our boss was cool and we happily obliged, giving them some very expensive cakes. We made the reservation for the two of us, on our anniversary. When we showed up, the woman in charge sat us down and then looked at the note on the gift card for about 15 seconds, clearly having no idea why we had this comped evening out. Then the first thing she suggested we try was one of their bottles of vodka...for $500. We politely said we were just there to try some champagne and needed some time to look over the menu. When our waitress showed up, what did she have but...a bottle of champagne costing $270. We hadn't even ordered anything yet. We very awkwardly told her that we didn't want the champagne and needed some time to choose something ourselves. The waitress was cool; obviously the woman who sat us was trying to get us to use up the gift card right away so we'd actually be paying customers...Now let me explain. We are not a cheap couple. We were not there to milk the gift card and get a load of free drinks and food. We would have happily paid for anything over $300. But the fact is that we had already paid for the gift card, not in money but in traded items, and we were just there to enjoy our anniversary, not to be pressured to use it all up in the first 3 minutes. Anyways the experience was just awkward and we left not too long after, using up only about $100 of the card (we were not offered the difference, nor did we ask) We were so disappointed and disgusted.

Pros: Beautiful setting, view

Cons: Pressure to spend $$$. The mixed drinks taste like they're made from a mix.
