Editorial Review for Bangkok Market – by Kim Cooper

The Scene
This cluttered neighborhood grocery is usually packed with local families picking up dinner fixings or snacks for the kids. Mainly serving the Thai community, the low prices and fresh meats also attract folks who don't know pad from larb.

The Goods
Bangkok Market is a font of unusual Asian food imports. Though the focus is Thai products, you'll also find stinky Indonesian durian jelly, Filipino Sarsi sasaparilla soda and Japanese cookies in wacky cartoon packaging. Canned fish, fruit, pickles and sauces fill the densely packed aisles. Jasmine rice is super cheap in the economy-size 50-pound sack. The market also carries specialty cooking utensils, fresh Asian vegetables and a great selection of teas. A small butcher's counter offers whole pompano fish, mackerel and mullet at insanely low prices plus those unusual parts of beef and pork so vital in Thai cuisine.
