The Scene – This homegrown gourmet market chain (with locations in Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties) built its reputation by offering excellent products, unbeatable service and special extras like wine tastings and cooking classes. Prices are as extravagant as the selection, but when the occasion calls for it, it's worth every penny. – – The Goods – Not only does Bristol Farms carry items alien to most grocery stores (caviar, fine Italian proscuitto), but a wide selection of familiar items. The spacious aisles are generously stocked with extraordinary mustards,…
One of the best GOURMET Markets in LA, Very expensive not for everyday
by vmarg at Citysearch
This market has a charming appearance on the outside and the "Farms" in the name is completely misleading because it has nothing to do with farm fresh produce. It is fairly small but well stocked. This is one of my favorite places in LA and the place I go to for something really special. The deli area almost always has a line for ready made sandwiches and their soups of the day are also popular and delicious. I like their smoked salmon which is reasonably priced depending on what kind you buy. I am not fond of their cheeses, because they are too expensive and exotic for me. Whole Foods on 3rd St has a much larger cheese selection. Their croissants are good. Their pastries and cakes are ridiculously high priced for smaller than average cakes. Their peanut butter is to die for, you will not buy peanut butter in a jar after tasting it. Their Joseph S. truffles are good as well and it's the only place in LA that has them as far as I know. Great for gifts. Do not purchase Godiva chocolate here, because it is noticeably not fresh. One time I bought cookies that literally fell apart when I opened the package. If you buy your everyday groceries here you are either a fool or a millionaire, and it's not convenient either because if you are looking for everyday basics, they are not well stocked. This is a place that is truly GOURMET with unique imported items that are not found anywhere else. Their prices actually change with dollar to Euro fluctuations. If you do find their products somewhere else, say Whole Foods for instance, I guarantee you it will be cheaper somewhere else. The real gem here is the spirit section which has a stock of unique wines, champaignes and other liquors not easily found. Look for price reductions here and really save. If you want something really rare and expensive check out the nook in the back with the locked cases. The surly older man who works there is extremely well informed and so are the other staff.
- Pros: Great wines, rare spirits, Really GOURMET food, original natural peanut butter
- Cons: Expensive Everything, some products become old from lack of fast turnover
