Editorial Review for Doughboys Bakery--CLOSED – by Steven Grimm

The Scene
The huge cylindrical object hanging on the wall--is it a steaming baguette, smoking cigar or what? This bakery-restaurant, with signage showing its namesake infantry-transporting loaves, draws a smart, urban crowd.

The Food
A dozen types of daily baked loaves line the back wall. You'll find them bolstering the better lunch eats. Served with baguette halves, soups--like the velvety cream of roasted garlic and smoky lentil and ham, or French onion soup gooey with Emmentaler cheese--come in huge crocks. Buttery baguettes grip huge fillings, like roast beef tricked up with Emmentaler and horseradish. For dinner or dessert, indulge in the PBC&B sandwich, which drives a standard-issue peanut butter and banana into hot French toast sticky with bittersweet chocolate.

The Extras

Along with bagels and muffins, Doughboys bakes a dozen-plus kinds of bread: kalamata olive, rosemary with roasted garlic and an earthy rye are among the voluptuous best.

When to Go

Breakfast is served all day, and dishes range from waffles to pancakes, from creamed beef on Asiago bread to blueberry-flax seed griddlecakes.

NOW ON HIGHLAND - Besides the dry meat, hard bread, flavorless soup and horrible service I was attacked by hundreds of black flies!! If your hungry try roadkill, it's probably better since I would not have to wait an hour for a waiter to bring it to me.

Bad food, bad, service, bad experience overall. I used to think this place was good when it was in the old location. I think the staff must hate the owner, and it shows. This place was dirty and out of almost everything on the menu. What was left over, was flavorless and stale. I will never return. Too bad because it used to be a pretty cool place to eat.

Pros: no pros left

Cons: the food, the service, and the cleanliness
