What People Are Saying About Doughboys

Featured Review

This beloved West Third Street brunch favorite re-opened in early 2010 with a series of free meals for area residents and twitter-savvy Angelenos. Although the new space is slightly smaller (around 1300 square feet with just under 70 total seats indoors and outdoors), the menu remains exactly the same. Expect Doughboys standbys such as "the monster" (a massive grilled foccacia topped with melted Swiss cheese, roast beef, mushrooms and onions) and their 4-egg frittata to keep the crowds flocking to this casual eatery into 2011 and beyond. And of course, no one leaves here without being…

  5. Tasty food, fun atmosphere
  6. Well it's not a romantic or tranquil, casual dining place but you can still get what you pay for, and at least the food is quite satisfying.
  7. The original location was probably the best but I'd be hesitant to believe all you read on here.
  8. It isn't a comfortable place to eat.
  9. used to think this place was good when it was in the old location.
  10. All-american diner stepped up by warm, welcoming, relaxed decor.

  1. After lunch we decided to get some sweets to go and I had to try the famous red velvet cake that was featured on Oprah.
  2. also wanted to try the red velvet cake that I've heard people rave about, so I took one to go.
  3. We heard they have a great red velvet cake and have wanted to try it, but the last few times we wanted to eat there the line was way too long and we ate elsewhere.
  4. Red velvet cake is amazing too!
  5. The frosting was good, but the cake itself was completely tasteless and rubbery/spongy-very disappointing.
  6. MUST haves are the French Onion soup, Red Velvet cake, Cob Salad, Warm portobello salad.
  7. Everything my friends and I have tried here has been great (except the red velvet cake, that is), and I would definitely recommend it.
  8. The chocolate cupcake is huge with creamy chocolate cream on the inside too!
  9. Haven't had a chance to try their desserts yet because the portions at Doughboys are big, but maybe one day, I'll get around to it.
  10. Great desserts, soups, sandwiches.
  11. The red velvet cake was featured on Oprah, I believe (even if I'm not a fan of her, it's no surprise she has great taste in cakes).
  12. We also ordered the Pecan Caramel Bar, which was disappointing because it had a hard texture, and the Red Velvet Cake, which is one of the best made velvet cakes I've ever had.

  14. The red velvet cake is a perfect mini cake for a special birthday or special occasion.

  18. Overall, nice neighborhood cafe to grab some solid, classic eats Heard the desserts are good too, but did not have room to try.
  19. But even before fatty Oprah divulged on television how good their Red Velvet cake is, I was a huge fan.
  20. If you love red velvet cake you will love this one more than any other.
  21. The red velvet cake is moist with the most amazing cream cheese frosting.

  1. If it's breakfast time and you're looking to quench a need for a sandwich, roll down to the newly reopened Dougboys (8136 W. Third Street) for their deliciously satisfying breakfast sandwiches.
  2. Friendly staff, good food with generous portions
  3. Ask to add the melted fontina cheese, but don't bother overdoing it with the peppers and mushrooms--they'll detract from the amazing cheesy, gooey, beef-horseradish yumminess you're about to experience.
  4. Cobb Salad good, sandwiches great, and the bread rules.
  5. Bad food, bad, service, bad experience overall.
  6. The chef mixes yummy cheeses with different meats for interesting combinations.
  7. If you want this type of sanwich-salad food with snotty trendy people around, I would recommend Cheebo on Sunset.
  8. Doughboys is a great value, portions are gi-normous, but mostly, the food is really special.

  19. The menu is full of yummy selections from salads to soups to pancakes.
  20. Doughboys has great food.
  21. this is the perfect place to lounge with a deep bowl of soup and a lusicious garden on your plate.

  57. The people watching is great, the food huge and delicious, and the prices cannot be better.
  58. The After School Special is a delicious twist on an old childhood favorite: Grilled Cheese and tomato soup.
  59. NOW ON HIGHLAND - Besides the dry meat, hard bread, flavorless soup and horrible service I was attacked by hundreds of black flies!
  60. Third, the Monster is messy but just ask for a lot of napkins cuz it's really tasty.
  61. Speaking of sandwiches, Doughboys happens to have *the* best sandwich on earth.
  62. You can get the same old thing at the rest of the breakfast/lunch places around town, but Doughboys' food is truly unique.

Pancake Review at: DOUGHBOYS CAFÉ

by MaamCakes

Pancake Review at: DOUGHBOYS CAFÉ

Today I visited Doughboys Café on 3rd Street between La Jolla and Crescent Heights, and decided to review their pancakes as my first blog entry. Until today I had only visited Doughboys once, and tried their absolutely amazing Challah French Toast (Bonaparte’s Breakfast)- so I was very much anticipating the taste of their pancakes. Although Doughboys has several tempting options, including Rice Krispy Pancakes, I decided to go with the Pumpkin Griddlecakes.

As I’m not such a fan of nuts, I asked the server if it was possible to have the meal sans walnuts; she explained that because the nuts are baked into the batter, this was not going to be possible. The server did, however, mention her dislike of walnuts as well, and assured me I wouldn’t be able to taste them. Boy was she right!

With a fantastic blend of pancakes, pumpkin, and walnuts, the first bite of Pumpkin Griddlecakes tasted like Thanksgiving morning. The pancakes were doughy but not heavy, and flavorful but not overbearing. While the pancakes were tasty with a hint of syrup, the scoop of whipped cream cheese on top sealed the deal.

The Pumpkin Griddlecakes at Doughboys are the perfect holiday breakfast treat; just steer clear if you are allergic to nuts!

*And as a side note, unlike many restaurants in LA, Doughboys serves breakfast ALL DAY LONG!

Doughboys - Horrid

THE WORST! This is not the place to go if you have a one hour lunch. Food took 30 minutes to prepare and they were not busy when we arrived at 12:10 pm. I ordered a burger - a special - too salty, asked for medium, but was told it comes one way - medium well, no pink. But, i wanted a medium burger. He said they would try. No such luck. We tried to cancel our order, but they hustled it through, telling us that food normally takes 20-25 minutes to prepare --- too long if you are on a lunch hour. I did see that they were doing a lot of take out, so I assume taht business got a priority. When they brought our meal it was lukewarm and I had cold potatoes. My friend ordered a special which came with foccacia and it did not. We boxed everything up and left. Had we stayed, I would have sent it all back -- how do you fix a tepid salt burger cooked their way

Never again. macDonalds - better, no salt.

Thinking hungry thoughs

A big bowl of french onion soup is sounding really good on a chilly day like today.

A friend turned me on to this place and now whenever I am in the neighborhood, I hook it up.

Can these people ever get it right?

by doinbiznass

Good thing they have good food because the service BLOWS! Try ordering delivery and see if they even get it right. Out of 5 recent orders only 1 was right and what a lovely lady they have taking those orders over the phone... wow.
