Friday farmers' market provides one-stop shopping for the Westside gourmand..
The Scene
With about 25 vendors from all over Southern California, the Venice Farmers' market is small but convenient. Friendly smiles and free samples are in abundance. Though prices are slightly higher than the supermarket, shoppers are drawn by the quality and diversity. Flower stalls brim with traditional sunflowers and lilies, as well as exotic Naked Ladies and Kahili Gingers. The produce selection is broad, including French breakfast melons, purple potatoes and Dinosaur Egg pluots (a plum-apricot hybrid) among other things. If these don't suit your curious palate, one stand sells baked sprout nuggets (celery, tofu and beans) and pasta made with kamut (Egyptian wheat). For the more conventional tastes, there are plenty of juicy peaches, apples and tomatoes.
