The Scene – Perched above a runway at the Santa Monica airport, the interior pays homage to Himalayan pilots with an illuminated glass etching of the mountain range dwarfing a tiny plane running the length of the sushi bar. – – The Food – Ultra-fresh raw fish is the main draw at the Hump. Start with knockout morsels of sashimi. Toro (fatty tuna), red snapper and hamachi (yellowtail) are paired perfectly with ingredients like Japanese peppers, cilantro, garlic or sea salt. Perfect bites of nigiri sushi are also sublime. For those who prefer their food cooked, the…

Expensive and bad. STAY AWAY!!!!

by Jackfoley70

We had the Omakase here last night and I can honestly say that I feel violated. I am still really angry 20 hours later.

For $250 per head for food alone we were treated to three dishes of wafer thin shashimi, some miso soup with an over cooked shrimp in it, a bucket of king crab (could have got this at Enterprise fish company for $30), a cooked medley of mushrooms and shellfish and a plate of stale sushi with 6 pieces on it. I thought the whole point of Omakase was to get one plate at at time of the chefs best fish. They tried to fill us up on King Crab. The sushi was standard fish (yellow tail, eel, mackrel, sweet shrimp) you can get at any cheap sushi joint. They even gave us bbq eel. No gold leaf....no thousand year salt...no toro. We eat sushi 3 times a week. This has got to be biggest rip off. For really great Sushi when you want to splurge I highly recommend Sushi Park on Sunset, Urasawa in Beverly Hills, Asanebo in Sutdio City. For great everyday sushi you can't go wrong with Katsuya in Studio City. Avoid this place at all costs.

the best everything

This is my favorite sushi place of all time. I could write a book on how good this place is. What the chefs do can only be described as art (eating at the bar is a must). You will find exotic fish/crustacean that you will not find anywhere else so make sure to ask the chef what is fresh that day. If you really want an experience (and money is no object) just ask for Omakase at the bar. The chef will create a menu for you based on the freshest items they have coupled with what he thinks you like from talking to you. And you are not going to find teriyaki chicken, beef bowls, or designer rolls like the vegas roll. This place specialized in simplicity and traditional style sushi. Almost forgot, they have real japanese Kobe beef. Everyone should try this at least once.

  • Pros: food, chefs, service, ambience, freshness
  • Cons: nothing bad to say

Still my favorite sushi restaurant, better than any sushi restaurant I have been to!!!!!!

by ic1234

I've been going to this place for a couple of years now and the restaurant has yet to disappoint me. Even on a busy Saturday nite 1/19, we were promptly seated and treated like anyone else in the restaurant such as Phil Jackson. As a tip, always make reservations, let them know if there are any special requests and be a little early. It was my birthday last night and they provided impeccable service, top notch food and even went beyond to make my birthday extra special with a great dessert. The food was fresh, exotic, beautifully presented and of course, tasted amazing. Not only was the sushi fresh, but their sauces were unbelievable! Their sauces are original and traditional, but reinvented with a twist and a created a perfect balance with their specialties and sushi/sashimi. Their food may be a little pricey, but if their menu consists of fresh fish (some are brought in from Japan) and creative dishes, it would be fair to say that the final bill should be higher than other restaurants. As for the review below mine, you must have picked the wrong night and ordered the wrong dishes because there is no way that this restaurant is better than Sasabune. If you are on an adventure to seek new tastes and fresh food, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who truly wanted to experience something new and exotic. I can't wait to go back!!

  • Pros: Food was awesome - must try wild yellowtail, service was great, accommodating
  • Cons: Some customers were rude because they couldn't get a table (they were walk ins)
