In Short – A refreshing change from Indian restaurants that festoon their dining rooms with kitschy gewgaws, this one has a sophisticated urban look, with soft lighting, contemporary art and marble walls. The menu ventures well beyond the standard chicken curry and tikka masala. Even tandoori dishes are eclectic, with unusual entrees such as tandoori sea bass and steak. Each table comes stocked with a bevy of fresh dipping sauces, including the atypical coconut cream. –

Greatest Indian Food in West LA

by LAvacationer

I have tried several Indian restaurants in LA and this one stands out as the best. The ambience is nice, and a pleasant change from the usual overly Indianized paintings that you wont even find in a restaurant in India. The food is done just right, with traditional dishes such as paneer prepared soft and flavoured with proper marination. And they do not hide the flavor of the food with overly hot and spicy condiments. Its definitely on the expensive side, but well worth it.

  • Pros: Delicious food, done just right
  • Cons: Expensive, small servings

My Favorite Indian Restaurant in the City!

by MadzFaves

I love Clay Pit. I'm craving it right now. I don't get the other users -- the food here is delicious! Yeah it's slightly pricey, but I'd pay the extra few bucks for Clay Pit over other Indian restaurants. The ambiance is great...dark and soothing which helps when you're eating the delicious but spicy lamb vindaloo. And, again, not sure what the other reviewers are talking about, but the service here is consistently very good -- and I eat out on a regular basis all over the Los Angeles area and have experienced a wide array of levels of service. The waiters here spoil you! They serve the food in a genteel and classy way, heaping the delicious entrees right onto your plate. And when my glass of water is running low they're right there to refill it. I love the chill and quiet atmosphere that allows me to fully enjoy the rich spices of the meal. I would cry if Clay Pit ever left Brentwood!

Disappointing and over-priced lunch buffet

by gourmetfan

This restaurant is over-hyped and over-priced, not as great as it is made out to be, especially if you are a vegetarian (like me) and are used to good, spicy Indian food. I am an Indian living in Los Angeles and my husband and I were looking for a good Indian restaurant in our area since most of the Indian restaurants in LA aren't that great and serve bland food with not too many vegetarian options. So when we read about Clay Pit and the great reviews given about it by many people, we decided to go there one day for lunch with my parents.

But when we went there, we were in for a major disappointment. There were only two vegetarian items on the buffet, which was a big turn-off for our group, all of whom are vegetarians. Plus, we found that there were no appetizers and soups on the buffet and there was also no dessert on the buffet. The waiter told us that if we wanted appetizers or dessert, we have to order them from the menu, and the items on the menu were all expensive. Also, the food on the buffet was very bland and we prefer Indian food to be very spicy and filled with plenty of vegetarian items. Also, the buffet was very expensive (about $13 per person). Moreover, the service was very disappointing since they did not refill the items on the buffet on time and no one came to take our orders for beverages.

So, we decided never to go there again since it was a total rip-off. I advise you, dear friends, never to try it if you like hot and spicy Indian food, if you are a vegetarian and if you like good customer service.

  • Pros: Good ambience and decor
  • Cons: Terrible and bland food, too expensive, not too many vegetarian items in the buffet
