In Short – Once a community cultural center that opened after the 1965 riots, the walls of this hip cafe are now adorned with photos and memorabilia of classic soul, R&B and blues artists. Guests drawn from the community and tourist crowds can dine either indoors or out. The restaurant serves up piping hot gourmet coffee by Howling Monk, a black-owned coffee company, along with a Sunday brunch buffet and Sunday dinner with staples like collard greens, hot water cornbread, mac 'n' cheese and sweet potato pie.
Editor's Tips
- What to Drink:
- Try the Melonade, a sweetly tart concoction born from an employee's experimenting with watermelon juice and lemonade one day while on break.
- The Extras:
- The coffeehouse caters events for up to 200 guests, and they can customize a menu and pricing to fit budgets and needs.
- When to Go:
- On the first Sunday of every month, the coffee shop hosts live blues, gospel and poetry performances.
