Editorial Review for Peet's Coffee & Tea – by Stephanie L. Smith

The Scene
Since its Berkeley beginnings in 1966, this chain has swapped its beatnik spirit for corporate glory. Cool flagstone floors and rich mahogany-colored paneling make for a sleek stop, but not a haunt in which to linger. Once the den of intellectuals and fringe artists, Peet's went IPO in early 2001 and is now frequented almost exclusively by people who want the conveniences of a franchised coffeehouse without having to succomb to Starbucks world domination.

The Coffee
Robust without being overbearing, strong but not bitter, Peet's "deep roast" beans make for a fine cup of joe. Straight up or in a latte, its dark, full-bodied character carries through. Hungry? You can always nab a blueberry muffin or an orange scone, but why not opt for one of the fine French pastries? Almond creme croissants, buttery apricot bars or eggy pain creme fraiche studded with fresh blueberries pair well with the brews.

Peet's is by far the strongest coffee I've ever had. No foo-foo drinks here. Everytime I have a drink I feel buzzed the rest of the day. I don't get this with the other coffee chains. Personally, I prefer my coffee to be on the sweeter side but they're vanilla latte is really good. Also, when substituting soy for milk, the drink tastes really good which I can't say for the competition. They also have a selection of vegan cookies which are delicious. They have the best ambience because they play classical music that easily falls into the background for studying and reading. Overall, the atmosphere feels really relaxed and this I like.

Pros: Snacks, Atmoshpere, Soy substitutes

Cons: Overpowering coffee

Of all the chains, this one is the best. They brew the coffee every 10 or 15 minutes.
