Not Authentic Indian – The service was fast and the environment was interesting. The food was not good. I order the Lamb Vindaloo, which is one of my favorite Indian dishes. The Lamb was dry and there were two potatoes in the whole dish. It was similar to fast food. I did enjoy the garlic naan. My wife liked her Electric Paneer. It might of just been an off day for the Vindaloo
Oh horrors of horrors – I know a thing or two about punjabi food...forget that...I know a thing or two about food and I just threw away $30 worth of food from here. The vindaloo tasted like they chucked a can of tomato sauce on burnt fish and potatoes that were raw and the outsides were burnt. The rice was cold and stale...AND if even possible...the paneer naan tasted like like burnt bread with rotten cheese. How cruel to have the only indian restaurant in the area be horrible. Booo... :-(
first time was a success! – great food, and the waiter was so nice to help us first-timers who didn't have a clue. the garlic bread and yogurt dip was delish, and the lamb with rice was enough for us 2 girls to share. very good prices, relaxing environment.
Cultural Discrimination in an Indian Restaurant – My boyfriend and I come to this restaurant every so often for the past 3 years. Each time we come here, the place is packed (usually on weekends). However, we decided to go last Tuesday night since we were in the area and felt like eating Indian food. When we got there (around 7:30), the restaurant was quite empty (only 2 tables were occupied). We first stayed at the bar area and had a couple of drinks waiting for another friend to arrive. We were there for 1/2 an hour. During that time, no one was coming in. There were many tables vacant. Just to give an idea, there are 4 big booths that seat 3-4 people, 3-4 smaller booths on the other side that will seat 2-3, and the rest were tables in the middle that accomodate 2 people and a few of 4 people tables. One of the bigger booths was occupied by 3 people. When our friend arrived, we requested the bigger booth. The man host said it was only for parties of 4 and not 3. We thought that was ridiculous since the place was not even a quarter filled and many tables were available for others to sit. We asked him how come there are 3 seating in the booth and they're there? He said they were waiting for another one (which was BS!). So we stayed in the other small booth and thru out dinner, that booth that was waiting for another one was still at 3 and left at 3 people and we noticed also that they sat some parties that only had 2 or 3 in the booth. Guess what, they were all "white" people. And us, we were Asians. They also seated 3 Asian ladies in the regular tables in the end of the restaurant. They could have sat those ladies in the nicer booth but instead put them in the middle and not in a good spot. It was very obvious that there was discrimination going on and that "man host" was reflecting this. The big booths were not even all used. We certainly will not eat there anymore and we are great paying customers. Anarkali in Melrose has much better quality of food than Electric Lotus.
WATCH OUT! Problems with delivery and then correcting the problem – After receiving a flyer on my doorstep, I placed a lunch order with Electric Lotus. When I received the order was both substantially overcharged AND the order was incomplete. When I called the restaurant to straighten this out, the person on the phone was unable to help me but did pass on a message from the manager that the prices on the flyer were wrong. I left my number for the manager or owner to call me back. It's been 3 days and no call. I tried the restaurant again, and again the person answering the phone could not help and could not tell me when or if the manager or owner would be in. Guess I'm outa luck but wanted to warn others.
Worse than before... – Went there for the 2nd time after 2 years...the service was worse than before, was promptly seated but waited for nearly half hour to place the first order (it wasnt busy)..ordered chicken biryani which had only a good price tag but no taste-chicken pieces were very large and not properly done.. ordered a paneer tikka which was not on the menu and that too dint taste like coming from a professional cook- the batter was not properly made..as for the ambience it was average but then who visits a fine dining just for ambience??...i wont recommend this place to anyone...
HARlDY ELECTRIFYING! – Another popular venue that sadly never rises above mediocre. NOT authentic of you think you're eating Indian food. It's bland pap for people who don't know food. The atmosphere is dark and loud. You cannot hold a quiet conversation and I've seen the place in daylight...ugly! My latest dinner there was a joke.
I will try never to return but so many people I know are just used to going there and afraid of true Indian flavors. In short this place is garbage. Read the review below this too!
This is NOT Indian food!!! – I wanted to check out this local restaurant that I had heard a lot about. The description, "Village Cuisine from India", was undoubtedly catchy and being an Indian I obviously wanted to try it out. After a Friday night dinner experience, my only conclusion is that this "joint" has become popular only from food lovers who are so naively enthusiastic that they can almost be fed anything in the name of Indian, world or eclectic cuisine. I hope the "Village" people from "India" don't get to see this sign after tasting their food or they will surely do something nasty to both the restaurant and the chef.
Just when I entered, I felt the decor was unimpressive. It was brown and smoky almost like a hippy joint. The inside was so dark you would almost need guidance technology to transfer food from the plate to your mouth. The servers were very casual and indifferent and rarely came around to see if you need anything or to refill your glass. The prices were also pretty steep. The worst part ... you guessed it ... the food. I ordered Lamb Kabab" and what I got was a few pieces of hard tasteless roasted lamb over a bed of uncooked peppers and onions, to the point that the Lamb seemed like a garnish to this pepper-onion pile. I also ordered a Chicken curry and was served with a bowl filled with large chunks of boneless chicken in an acidic gooey mess of tomato, something that was so disproportionately tart that even the city people of India would not cook in a million years, let alone its village people.
I would beg the foodies to listen to an Indian and stay as far away from this restaurant as possible. My recommendation to the owner and chef(who, I confirmed, is NOT Indian) ... "if you can't cook Indian food ... then don't cook Indian food, but for heaven's sake STOP FOOLING PEOPLE!!"
Best Indian Food and ambiance to go with it! – Great food and decor. It is dark in there but I think they are just going for that mood. Make sure to always make a reservation and ask for one of the booths to get the whole experience....very romantic and wont be just another candle-lit dinner.
Slow service, too dark, inept – I love Indian food. So, we tried this place. BUT...I can't comment on the food because I NEVER GOT ANY! It was COLD and so DARK, we could barely read the menu. Service was SO slow, we had to have our food packed to go without taking a bite. Got back to the office and MY meal was not packed at all and everyone else's meals were missing the naan bread. Called to ask them to deliver the missing food; wouldn't/couldn't do it. Told me I'd have to come get it; I can't do that, I'm already back to work, lunch break is over. Over the past 3 months, I've made multiple phone calls, talked to several people at the restaurant, been promised multiple times in various way that I would be receiving a full refund...and still have no refund. Once I was told the owner is being sued and that maybe that's why he hasn't taken care of it...I don't care! I am SO aggravated and frustrated about this. So...if you want to sit in a cold, dark cave, get slow, careless service and risk getting your order wrong...this is THE place to go!
