What People Are Saying About Father's Office

First things first. This isn't the kind of bar where you can just waltz in at any hour of the night and expect fast service and no crowd. No, this is L.A. County's landmark gastropub (tiny as it is) where foodies, beer connoisseurs (and sometimes smug scenesters) from near and far wait in ridiculously long lines in hopes of getting a spot at one of the tables crammed inside. The plain hardwood walls and tile floors make the place as loud as a high school cafeteria, even on the rare occasion when there aren't many people around. The house offers a seasonally rotating selection of 36 "craft"…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
There are no substitutions on menu items, absolutely no ketchup provided for fries and no table service--order at the bar.
The Extras:
Don't hesitate to ask for help in choosing a beer from their vast (and somewhat intimidating) selection. They'll find a beer to suit your taste and will even give you a sample to help you decide.

  8. Father's Office rocks, it's always packed and has a great buzz but there is always room in the new spacious location, and the owner is a famous chef not just some bar guy, so his specials are the best in town, and no tax, what a deal.

  13. Their burger and sweet potato fries are unbelievably delicious, however the fact that there is no waiting list, no hostess, and no reservations, are the reasons I did not give this place a 10.
  14. ... , if you like to beg for silverware for your overpriced food, if you like to beg for a napkin, if you like to reach across the bar and scream and yell for service
  15. As everyone mentioned, people are friendly here.
  16. Lines, no space, crowds, overpriced food, rude/cocky staff, nuff said.
  17. This past weekend was my last attempt of many at getting one night of decent service at this place.
  18. Great food and atmosphere spoiled by terrible customer service
  19. The staff are rude, self-absorbed, arrogant and not terribly helpful.
  20. For example, some people like good food and are willing to trust those who have been trained to prepare it well.
  21. If the employees were as nice as the people I've sat next to at this bar the place would be worth it.
  22. Bad service I can put up with for good food, but attitude?
  23. it can be hours of fun in a friendly atmosphere.
  24. The greatest challenge is finding a place to sit - Also, they aren't really big on amazing guest service.
  25. Too crowded, bad service & got sick on the food
  26. loved our bartender.
  27. love Father's Office, and even more than that, I think the bartenders are awesome!
  28. They don't have great service, and by that I don't mean I was ignored or something.
  29. Great beer selection and friendly bartenders.
  30. Hard to find a place to sit, and hard to get the attention of the bartenders, but still a great place to go when you just want to chill somewhere good and don't want to deal with show-offy folks.
  31. Terrible service, terrible pours, overpriced beers
  32. If the service is bad leave a one penny tip.
  33. Also, seeing as how their beer is actually interesting and well-selected (and therefore does not come by the yard), I'm sure some people would be opposed to the "small portions.
  34. Great food, bad bartenders.
  35. few things I did enjoy were the sweet potato fries served in a charming mini grocery cart and the company of friendly people.
  36. Not recommended for anyone who is meeting friends or family there since they have a strict occupancy policy of no more than 140 people at one time.
  37. can't imagine a business thrives with such poor service and weak concept for a restaurant.
  38. Everyone was really friendly, but it was kind of a bummer to have to share a tiny space at the end of the bar to eat our meal.
  39. The burger was very good, as were the fries and the bartenders recommendation of beers.
  40. This is one of those pretentious places that people love because it makes them feel in the know.
  41. Neither of the bartenders could provide a decent pour (and let's face it, when your beer costs >$8 it would be nice to get more than 2/3 of a small glass) and the service was next to nonexistant. What service there was bordered on rude. The beer is extrem
  42. In addition, the cramped accomodations force you to mix it up with people - which is great, reminded me of some old English bar in the UK.
  43. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but the bartender helped me choose one I've never even heard of (and can't remember the name) and it was delicious!
  44. Rude service, unpleasant experience, rude owners

  1. ... , if you like to beg for silverware for your overpriced food, if you like to beg for a napkin, if you like to reach across the bar and scream and yell for service
  2. The burger was REALLY GOOD as were the sweet potato fries (both really expensive).
  3. All the folks bagging on the burgers are just trolls; It is damn good and worth the drive.
  4. It can get incredibly packed at night, and even after they let you in (and take your order, and bring your food), you're likely to find yourself standing in the middle of the crowd, table-less, juggling an eight dollar Chimay and a mini-shopping cart full
  5. Lines, no space, crowds, overpriced food, rude/cocky staff, nuff said.
  6. Terrible service, terrible pours, overpriced beers
  7. The burger is quite amazing, but whether you think it's worth the wait and the hassle is up to you.
  8. Burgers are good, but they better be if someone's going to fork out $12 bucks.
  9. The beef was so good, you didn't think twice about spending nine bucks on a hamburger.
  10. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but the bartender helped me choose one I've never even heard of (and can't remember the name) and it was delicious!

  12. I've had better burgers for less money and less wait time, but hey it was still a good burger.
  13. At $12 bucks a pop and around $6-8 for a beer, this isn't a cheap meal, but if you're craving a good burger or are taking a friend out from out of town, this is a great place.
  14. Just a good chill hang out and the food and beer so worth it!
  15. But then I was jostled by some frat boys and I remembered why I don't come very often - there is always a huge crowd in this tiny space with very limited seating.
  16. If the employees were as nice as the people I've sat next to at this bar the place would be worth it.
  17. Also, seeing as how their beer is actually interesting and well-selected (and therefore does not come by the yard), I'm sure some people would be opposed to the "small portions.
  18. There are plenty of other great places to spend your money.
  19. One last thing, why are the beers so expensive and so damn tiny?
  20. If you just have to try the place I suggest getting an overpriced beer and an order of $6.50 sweet potato fries and see if you can get that far.
  21. It's a very small space, but has a huge clientele.

  1. but I'll get beyond that long enough to say, OH MY HOW GREAT IS THE FATHER'S OFFICE BURGER!
  2. I've once stood in line to get in as it opens and the place was full within 30 mins.

Ok burger, Ok bar.

by Strawberryn447

It's not bad, but not what I'd expected. I went there because my girl friend chose the place and wanted to try it out, and to be honest, I wouldn't go on my own or invite someone there for a burger.

This place is a bit overated. They make a decent burger. To be honest I expected more from all the hype I've been hearing from it. I've had better burgers for less money and less wait time, but hey it was still a good burger.

  • Pros: beer + burger
  • Cons: crowed

A place you can feel.... Ignored.

by WORX4FUDE

So, I've been going here, on and off, for about 8 years now. When it's empty, it can be quite a delightful place to be. They have a decent "gastropub-eqsue" burger. However, when the dragon's den is teeming with yuppies and beerheads, there's no place on Earth I'd rather NOT be (except maybe the Apple store; an experience I'd forfeit for a brain stroke any day).

To their credit, the beer selection exceeds most people expectations, and their fries are second to none. However, when you've been waiting at the bar for fifteen minutes, in a sea of people, unrecognized by the bar steward, and some random "regular" customer walks in and gets a pint poured before his second foot enters the door, you feel like stabbing the barkeep. I hate nothing more than a bar that regards favoritism as a trademark. If you aren't on a first-name basis at this place, don't go when it is busy - you WILL regret it.

With the introduction of a second Father's Office in Culver City, there IS hope for a decent experience during the evening. I've yet to go to find out. I refuse to return to this place during busy hours unless it's on someone else's tab and I don't have to brave the brutish crowd of drunks to get a proper pint.

Be advised: if you DO go during a crowded time and insist on a pint or two, get a pitcher, so you don't have to return to the bar for a while.

  • Pros: Amazing fries, good beer selection
  • Cons: Horrible service, long lines, limited parking

by Doggy

I got sick from a burned outside, frozen inside "famuse burger", total rip off !

  • Pros: Good place to waste alot of money.
  • Cons: Worse uncooked burger in town.
