Editorial Review for The Grand Star – by Shivon V. Tuoni

In Short
This Chinatown bar will make you feel right at home--especially considering the bartender is a former Miss Hong Kong who calls herself Mommy. Settle in at a table, booth or the bar. If you're feeling ambitious, go ahead and exercise your pipes during the week when the karaoke is beginner-friendly. Or go on the weekend for the lounge-y jazz band favors classic Sinatra tunes but have been convinced to play "Crazy Train"--yes, the Ozzy classic.

On a Friday night, my date and I went to Grand Star early to get in for free and ordered won ton soup and and an sauteed eggplant dish there, which came from another restaurant but tasted great and reasonably-priced. Then we waited a little bit for the jazz trio to start, the head jazz singer/pianist sang but a couple of the patrons asked to sing and were obliged. Finally, we enjoyed dancing upstairs in a comfortably air-conditioned room to fast music. If you don't come early, cover is $10.

I went here for karaoke, and it seems that is being phased out. They have live bands but when I went, it was so darn empty. Don't take your date here, he or she will be disappointed.

Pros: Cheap drinks, In Chinatown

Cons: , Not many peeps
