Editorial Review for Sony Pictures Studios Tour – by Pamela Cardin
The Background
Once home to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, this is where luminaries like Judy Garland and Clark Gable worked. Countless classics such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Singin' in the Rain" emerged from the MGM lot. Since taking over in 1989, Sony moved its Columbia/TriStar division here, as well. For you nostalgic types envisioning the days when Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg ran things in Tinseltown, this is as close as you'll get.
The Facts
MGM buffs may be disappointed to find there is very little left of the original studio besides a stray lion head or two. Blithe docents lead guests around old soundstages where flicks like "The Wizard of Oz" were filmed. But much of the two-hour walk is dedicated to what's new--e.g., intricate costumes from "The Patriot" and "Charlie's Angels" (displayed behind glass in the reception area) and a close-up of the "Jeopardy!" sound stage.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoSince Sony is an active studio, certain soundstages will be closed sometimes. Just because you saw the set of "Wheel of Fortune" once doesn't mean you'll see it again. Ditto for the ever-changing displays in the reception area.
