Beat It Editorial Review

The Skinny
Knowing that L.A. just can't get enough of the past, Beat It transforms the Ruby into a virtual music time machine. The magic starts in the '70s room with disco and funk. Move through the decades to the main room, where images of pop icons, including a sneering Billy Idol, a depressed Depeche Mode, and a black Michael Jackson, are projected onto the walls. Cute go-go boys shake it on platforms high above the crowd while all your favorite '80s tunes play. Keep moving forward in time to the back room for some ambient '90s sounds. And don't forget the huge outdoor patio, which is always great for smoking and carousing.

The Crowd
The crowd is mainly 18- to 20-year-olds dressed in full '80s regalia and looking for the decade they don't remember. Dressing up is not required, but it sure is fun.

Insider Tips

Dress Up

Break out the leg warmers and acid-wash jeans--there's an unwritten rule at Club '80s that anyone dressed in period gear gets in for free.

Find a Flyer

Get in for $5 with a flyer, which can usually be found at local record stores.

Get in Line

One of the club's few drawbacks is the line for the bathrooms, especially on the women's side, where the wait can be 20 minutes or more.
