In Short
Retro yet dignified, Mastro's does all it can to conjure up the ghost of Frank Sinatra with its old-school sensibility. Choose the quiet downstairs dining room with its vaguely Italian vibe, or the upstairs piano bar, where crowds gather to hear and even bust a move to the live music. Either way, you'll want to knock back a highball while pondering the encyclopedic steakhouse menu. Portions are King Kong-sized and priced accordingly, with a la carte entrees often surpassing the $30 mark. Those who like gimmick-laden appetizers should try the shrimp cocktail set in a bed of vaporizing dry ice. But don't let it distract from the demon red meat. Bone-in rib eye--a fist-thick slab--arrives at the table sizzling in butter. Just as substantial, the baked pork porterhouse seals in all the flavor of its rosy-pink center. Other cuts include a bone-in filet; 40-ounce, double-cut porterhouse; and Kansas City strip.

Here's an update to our experience at Mastro's on May 23. I finally received a call from the manager of Mastro’s, Beverly Hills, albeit 3 days after I initially spoke with someone about our issue, and after I sent the corporate office a scathing email about our experience. It seems he did not get the message from the person who initially answered my call, but he did receive my email. I had a good conversation with him about the incident, and received his sincerest apologies, both for the seating fiasco, and for no one contacting us in a prompt manner. He said it’s not their normal way of doing business. He noted that Mastro's is all about the people who dine there…if not, they wouldn’t be around long. I do feel that Mastro’s made it right with us, and we will visit them again. I really do want to visit them again, because no doubt about it, their food and service is terrific!

So my husband and I were going to Spago's for his birthday, but he did not like the atmosphere and wanted something a bit more fun. We walked down the street and found Mastro's. They had a live band and my husband loves red meat so we stayed. The service was excellent, everyone was very friendly to us even though we are just normal valley folk and not celebrities. Or prostitutes. Yeah, the other reviewer was right, they were there. About the food, my husband is the connoisseur as I am more into nice sauces and interesting flavors, and he said he has had better steak. We both agreed that it was very salty, but his filet was extremely tender. We had mashed potatoes and asparagus for our sides and started with crab stuffed mushrooms. All tasted decent, but nothing exciting. I certainly never came close to exclaiming over the flavors. By the end of the evening, the really poor selection of songs played by the cover band was really starting to get on my nerves. The music was blaring so loud that I gave up on trying to converse about halfway through the meal and left with a headache. My husband became sick that night but I felt OK so not sure if it was something he ate or not. Overall, I'd say it is not worth the money, there are surely other places with the same food for less than the $250 we spent on dinner for two.

The steaks are the best, hands down. Some cuts are better than others, i.e, the filet mignon is better than the prime rib. I recommend the lobster mashed potatoes and creamed corn. And don't leave until you order the butter cake for dessert. This is a loud, crowded Beverly Hills crowd, complete with celebrities and prostitutes. I find this amusing, but I go when I'm definitely up for it! You can have fun here, but be in a party mood. Don't come looking for quiet intimacy or you will be disappointed.
