Editorial Review for Venice Whaler Bar & Grill – by Don Waller
The Scene
Technicolor sunsets, palm trees in silhouette, buffed-out bodies and rollerbladers on the boardwalk. Life's a picture-perfect postcard from L.A. at this longtime, mostly locals' watering hole with a laidback atmosphere and comfortable, no-frills decor. When the upstairs deck gets too crowded, watch the passing parade from the window seats downstairs. Multiple TVs and satellite radio provide entertainment options, but it's really all about the vibe and the view.
The Draw
It's multiculti Cali, casually dressed. Combine equal parts singles, couples and groups, throw in local color and serve well-chilled. Designate-a-driver drinks and call-a-taxi cocktails are the main attraction, with tap brews, margaritas and a breakfast-to-dinner menu as other options. Whether you order German chocolate cake shots, mind-bending citrus-almond beer concoctions or an Irish whiskey neat, keep in mind the bartenders here are mixologists, not actors: Red Bull and vodka? You'll have to go to Hollywood for that.

I love this bar! This is such a great location, right on the beach. The food is good, not special, but good. The drinks are excellent and everything is priced accordingly. Great place to watch games, although there aren't a lot of tv's. Upstairs is balcony seating and a bar, downstairs is more like a sports bar. This place is HOPPING on the weekends with tons of beach combers and tourists, but well worth your time. Just valet and call it a night!
Pros: Beautiful Sunsets
Cons: Parking
