Editorial Review for Cobras & Matadors – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
The Spanish tavern concept has been updated with a California touch here and caters to a funky 20-something crowd. Vintage photographs plaster the walls and the chef stokes a wood-fired oven in the corner. It's practically empty in early hours, but after 8:30pm, the small room hums with a chattering crowd.
The Food
Cobras & Matadors fills a vacuum in a nearly tapas-less town, with 17 varieties and authentic touches uncommon outside of Spain. Smear spicy lomo embuchado (dry-cured pork loin) on toast rounds and follow with a bite of Garocha (aged goat cheese). Patatas fritas are pleasantly salty triangles of fried potato, but can leave diners parched. The entrees are also meant to be shared, served family-style in pre-cut portions. Flavorful skirt steak is offset by pungent anchovy butter and smoky Idiazabal (Basque shepherd's cheese) sauce. Roasted game hen, though slightly overcooked, gets sassed up with sweet-sour Catalan sauce.

GREAT GREAT GREAT food and great atmosphere. Reminds us of SOHO... little, loud and good. If you like AOC, try this place. Great small plates without the huge cost of AOC. Friendly and attentive staff. Have now gone 4 times. Try the meat bals in cilantro sauce --- just great!
Pros: Small plates so lots to try
Cons: Make reservations WAY in advance.

I don't know what all the hype is about. The food is decent. Its not even traditional Spanish food. It's a mix of "Latin tapas" not European Spanish. If you've ever been to Spain you would know that C&M is a Latin style tapas "inspired" by Spain. Sure they add a few Spanish ingredients, but that doesn't make it Spanish. Most people that go to C&M think that Spanish food is Mexican food. Thats like saying Italian food is like French food. To different worlds
Pros: ambiance
Cons: service, size
