The Scene
Set within the Avalon Hotel, this indoor/outdoor space is a study in mid-century modern chic. Wire chairs and other Noguchi- and Eames-inspired furniture are scattered around the window-lined indoor lounge area and courtyard patio. Businessmen, well-heeled fashion editors and Fred Segal hipsters sip cocktails and nibble food from coffee tables nestled next to poolside cabanas. Service is friendly, but can become hurried as the night progresses and the crowd expands.
The Food
Evenings, diners can order from either the bar or dinner menu, no matter where they're sitting. The bar menu is perfectly suited for the hotel's haute casual atmosphere. Standouts include a stellar juicy hamburger, as well as a cast of savory smallish plates, like seasonal tomato salad or duck spring rolls. A more ambitious full menu steps away from an earlier comfort-food focus to deliver well-crafted, healthier dishes like seared duck breast over red-rice risotto, pan-fried crispy black bass and pureed sweet onion soup.

Went on a Monday for Burger Night. Very expensive but good atmosphere. The waitress was good but in the "weeds". It was not her fault, the manager said they were understaffed. I don't think I would go back.

Reserved a cabana for my 30th bday party last month and had a really great time, albeit a short one. The scene here starts a little early and ends early too (deserted by 12:30). Had a couple of their appetizers and they were good, albeit a bit pricey. Yes, I agree that some of the staff were a bit snooty (the server looked miffed that we wouldn't order cocktails except for the pre-arranged alcohol we had already ordered), though the valet & other staff were friendly. Very nice background for pictures, though.

You're definitely in LA trying to be in Miami when you walk into this place. The glass divider between the pool and the restaurant definitely gives you the LA sense of glamour and style. The food was alright - nothing special on their "set" valentine's day menu. The ahi was a little bland - the prawns a little tasteless and the lamb a little rough. But the ambiance is nice....good for a date if you don't know your date so well. The tables are set up so you have a diner feel.....not very intimate...and kinda loud. But still a nice place to go. Don't mind the stuck up waiters - you are in LA, after all.
