Editorial Review for Gold's Gym – by Drew Pisarra

The Scene
Conan the Barbarian and the Incredible Hulk (aka Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno) lifted weights at the Venice, Calif., flagship years ago, but even today, customers frequenting charter locations are bound to encounter serious muscle. Take note: The boys with bulging biceps are the mascots, not the majority.

The Workout
Gold's generally offers Spinning, aerobics and kickboxing classes, yet the core of the program has always been weight training. Dumbbells and barbells, not spa-like amenities, are the rule. Ultimately, stalwarts at this gym (and its trainers) advocate tried-and-true techniques when it comes to getting in shape.

This is a fine place to work out if you don't mind cold air conditioned air being blown onto your face while you are on any cardio machine . If you are effected by cold air I would not recommend wasting your time or money. Aside from that, it is a moderately maintained and moderately clean. It's nothing fancy but, you do get what you pay for. Parking is available one block away.

Pros: it's cheap

Cons: too cold + serious artificial wind chill factor

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I've been at this gym for 3 years and I couldn't be happier. yeah, there is plenty of free-weight, plate-loaded, and traditional machines for pumping iron, as well as numerous cardio contraptions....however, it should be known that the gym has an extensive list of classes, all taught by highly qualified, energetic, and engaging instructors...everything from yoga and pilates to kick-boxing, hip-hop, or spinning. i barely even lift weights at all anymore (i used to live for it!) but i still feel like i'm at the best gym for just about anything i want to do for my workouts! also, the nice tanning beds and delicious smoothie options certainly add to the experience!

Editor's Review

Despite its Hollywood connections, this franchise's focus is on pumping iron, not newfangled razzle-dazzle.  See the full editorial review.
