good sushi, fresh fish, decent sushi restaurant, highly recommend rainbow, best tartar, slow waitresses, like top sushi shef
what happened!?. havent been to kokyo in months since tom left, but a few days ago we decided to stop by for a few bites...oh what a MISTAKE! i asked for what the catch of the day was and the sushi chefs reply was 'everything'. okay, a bit cocky but fair enough..so i told him to suprise us with whatever he thought was good. (keep in mind, ive been to all the sushi restaurant in la) what i got was some sort of jello with seafood, sushi with..sundried tomato and shmear mixed with raw fish and the last finale...tuna with super salty miso paste hidden inside (looked pretty though, looks CAN be decieving)! boy was i suprised! seriously, fusion is one thing but this is out of control! did he try his own creation and think 'a sure winner'. i miss the good ol' days when tommy was up front.
Best Sushi Rolls. Sushi Kokyo has the best sushi rolls! The fish is fresh and they add TONS of roe to the mixed greens salad! I highly recommend the Caterpillar, Rainbow, and Spider Rolls. For those who like a wasabi taste try the Awesome Roll. Sit at the bar (cuz the waitresses are a tad slow) and try to get Chef Masaru to make your sushi. It's less expensive than most sushi places in L.A. and the parking garage is free. Plus, they have rolls, ngiri, and sashimi as well as other Japanese entree staples (tempura, teriyaki...) Note: They stop taking sushi orders at 9 pm even though they close at 10 pm. Also, make reservations for large groups the day of.
Kokyo is a perfection!. I like the top sushi shef a lot. He's got a great skill and knows how to entertain customers at the same time. The restaurant's atmosphere is very nice and always filled with plenty of customers. The waitress/waiters are well trained and very nice. Highly recommended!
Hometown classics from Japan meet fusion sushi on the Westside..
In Short
A spacious room with standard sushi-bar decor--white walls, black trim and light-wood floors--is spare and tasteful. A local crowd includes families, couples and hipsters. Sashimi is garnished with bright orange and green fish roe, and fanciful fusion sushi, such as toro tartare on triangles of fried wonton, is garnished with three signature sauces. Cooked fish dishes include grilled black cod yuwan-yaki served in yuzu sauce.
Amazing Sushi!. Great Sushi! The fish was extremely fresh and the hot food was equally well done.
Excellent! - Get to know the sushi guys. I've been going to Sushi Kokyo for several years now because I followed one of the sushi chefs from his previous restaurant there. I have consistently received excellent service and food. I definitely recommend getting to know the sushi chefs - that's the best way to ensure that they know what you want and how to prepare what you want - they're friendly, considerate and very helpful and are always willing to accomodate a customer's tastes.
Believe it.
Believe everyhting you have heard. This place has very fresh and yummy sushi. Not to mention SAKE!
Dessert try their capuccino ice cream!
Surprisingly Good!.
I call myself a sushi know it all! As a transplanted NYorker trying to find good sushi, I went to the usual top spots....
I was told to go to Kokyo, went not expecting much, It was delicious! Rolls are fesh, tuna melts in your mouth! Don't go for the crowd, go to have good sushi.
whoa mama. I would (and have) follow wherever Chef Masaru decides to make his next stop. The man has an eye for ultra fresh fish and his talent with the blade is unmatched. You have to see the dishes that he puts out to appreciate his art. I would go for the sushi alone - I've had a single jumbo freshwater prawn large enough to slice in half to make a full order on its own and the best monkfish liver I've ever tasted - but it's Masaru's cheer and fun banter with the customers that make me want to come back every week.
best tar-tar around. ...fresh as it gets! i am a tuna-tar-tar-o-phile, and 'bang for you buck', there interpretation can not be beat! the Rainbow roll is plentiful. the mood is relaxed and unpretentious. and if the elevators are too slow, take the stairs.
