Editorial Review for Paseo Colorado – by Jackie Potts

In Short
Terra cotta tile roofs, storefronts and fountains with a distinctly Mediterranean theme have replaced the former Plaza Pasadena mall on Colorado Boulevard. Developers of the new, open-air shopping complex have also re-opened Garfield Avenue to pedestrians. Thinking beyond the traditional mall, this "urban village" will eventually offer 380 apartments in addition to the more than 60 shops, eight restaurants, full-scale gym, luxury spa, 14-screen multiplex, and Gelson's market.

I was thrilled when the horrible old mall was torn down and this was built. I loved it when it first opened and have been back at least once a year since. I probably would never go here for a "must have" shopping trip; I prefer strolling around and poking into stores as the mood strikes. There are vendor carts in front of shops and plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. Go at night when it's filled with lights and ambience. Dine at PF Chang's, grab a beer at the Yard House or a cup of coffee at Starbuck's. Stores in the mall are mostly chain stores but it's still fun to poke around.

Pros: Nice Place to Stroll

Cons: Fewer Stores Than the Average Mall

Now, I like a good outdoor mall just like anyone else, and I don't deny this mall is beautiful to look at. I don't like the lack of variety or exhorbitant prices at this place though. In fact, it makes me miss the old Pasadena mall TERRIBLY because it's where I spent the bulk of my adolescence! Imagine, I basically learned how to shop in the Pasadena mall, and now, in its place, there's this lovely disappointment that limits my ability to exercise those skills. What a pity.
