Two words: yak momos. They're a wondrously stuffed with minced yak and shaped like a star. For those not too into the unconventional, Tibet-Nepal House also has great curry options.
Great Alternative To Busy Oldtown. Been here a few times now. Lunch buffet is a great deal, it is $9.99 and you get a too much food. If you have never had this food before I equate it to Indian food with out the spicy or strong curry flavors, more of a mellow flavor with rich sauces that really stick with you. Last time I filled up on naan, chicken wings, tofu saag, shrimp masala, basmati rice, fried vegetable thing fruit and of course the rice custard/pudding. If you are in the area and don't want to deal with slow service of Akbar or the bad service of All India Cafe, come here for fast filling food at lunch time 1130-230. I recommend the 90 minute free parking at the lot on Raymond.
Hope this won't stay a secret in Pasadena! So delicious!. I came to Tibet Nepal House because of the extensive veggie/vegan menu for a friend visiting from out of town. I'd never been here before, so I really didn't know what to expect, but I was thoroughly impressed: contrary to the other reviews, our appetizers arrived very quickly, meals were served in a completely reasonable amount of time (no longer than any other restaurant I've been to), service was great, our orders were perfect, and the food was DELICIOUS. I'd go back again in a heartbeat and be enthusiastic about ordering something else on the menu instead of "the usual"! Portions were big, and the food was so good -- check it out! We loved our dinners and can't wait to go back.
below average food. I wouldn't say service was terrible, but the servers were not very helpful. We had a lot of questions that they couldn't answer. We had the lamb curry and it was quite good. They recommended us yak meat, and ordering it was the worst decision we could've made. They brought out a small dish of dark cubes with a couple pieces of green pepper. It cost $17 for about 7 pieces of dried up, over cooked steak. Everything else was just average. Probably wouldn't go again.
LOUSY SERVICE, one good dish.
This was my first time at the restaurant, and it was a horrid experience, except that the lamb curry was delicious. The waiter told me that I could order any of the chicken or lamb dishes as part of the Nepali Set menu, and then told me that I could only order a chicken or lamb curry. My partner tried to order his Chyamtango Pujaari spicy, and the waiter told him 'It's already spicy', and it was the blandest thing I've ever eaten: we could taste no spices at all. Certainly there was no dry chili, cumin or garlic in evidence. We asked for water, and 15 minutes later, had to grab another staff member to ask again. We ordered garlic naan, and we received plain. People around us were getting served while we sat waiting. Finally, in disgust, we asked for the check, and when the waiter told me that I still had dessert coming, I complained about all that was wrong and said I didn't want to stay any longer. There was no apology forthcoming, and the bill was for the full amount. We left no tip. I've never done that before, and I'm 54 years old.
All of this is too bad, because the lamb curry was delicious. I suspect that I'll come back some day and try to have a better time, but this was one LOUSY restaurant experience.
The first and only Tibetan and Nepalese eatery in Southern California uses only fresh herbs and spices..
In Short
If healthy food is what you crave, Chef Karma Tenzing Bhotia's menu will certainly excite your taste buds. Start off with momos (pasta shells filled with meat, vegetables and spices), a dish only served during special occasions in Tibet/Nepal. Vegetarian options include a tofu salad and a hearty nine-bean soup. Non-vegetarians can choose from lamb and chicken dishes like Himalayan chicken and lamb sekuwa. Don't miss the Mt. Everest in a blanket dessert (ice cream rolled in crepes, topped with chocolate sauce).
HORRIBLE SERVICE. I had my first and ONLY experience at the Tibet Nepal House a few months ago when I went with a few of my friends. It took our server an hour before he even took our order. They forgot about my friend's order and when they finally brought it to him (about 45 minutes later) it was not vegetarian and my friend had ordered a vegetarian meal. He wasn't able to eat anything the rest of us had ordered because there was meat in all of it. I was astonished at what poor service we recieved. When we told our server that this was incorrect and how long we had been waiting (we didn't yell, just politely informed him of the error) he gave my friend a dirty look. Our server was only at our table perhaps 6 times the entire evening and we ended up sitting and waiting for things for about 2 hours instead of actually eating. This is unfortunate because the food is actually very good, but my appetite was spoiled because of the poor service. I will not be returning to the restaurant anytime in the near future.
Family Favorite.
My sister discovered this restaurant at the last minute right before her internship in Nepal and it has been a family favorite ever since.
The staff is very kind, the prices reasonable and the selection is so vast I have trouble deciding what to get everytime I go. There is something for everyone, as half my family is vegetarian, and everything is consistenly delicious.
Metered street parking is available, but it might be difficult to find on weeknights since Old Towne is close by. I highly recommend the aloo as a main dish and the rice pudding for a treat at the end.
No Regrets for Tibet. I just had to try this place out, I was not familiar with Tibet food. A soon as we walked in the door, the server pleasantly greeted us and seated us. He gave us all the info on what ingredients they used on their dishes, what were the recommended dishes based on our liking, overall, we felt confident we made the right choices in ordering. The lentil soup is yummy. Portions are good for sharing between two persons. Ambiance is quite serene. Pricing is very fair, $50 will do for a party of two with a beer each including tip.
So-so buffet. Supposedly this was voted best buffet for 2005, it surely didn't show it when me and my friends went this past week. They did have everything that was advertised, but the food was lukewarm. The rice was dry and the chicken was slightly burned. Only the veggy curry and bread was good. We also ordered an appetizer Maasu Mo-mo, that was very good compared to the buffet we had.
Great place. This place has great food, wonderful staff and a serene environment. The food is delicious, I had never had Himalayan food before, but it's a bit across between Chinese food and Indian food, both of which I love. Try it, this place is a great experince. The only thing I don't recomend about this place is to avoid it if you're in a hurry. Everything is made to order so relax, take in the environment and the smells and the food is come eventually.
