Editorial Review for Palm Springs Aerial Tramway – by Jennifer Schwartz

The Background
One especially hot desert day in the late 1930s, electrical engineer Francis F. Crocker looked up at the surrounding snow-capped mountains and wished he could be where it was "nice and cool." In 1963, Crocker's dream became reality when the first passenger-carrying tram traveled up more than 12,000 feet of cable to reach the top of Mt. San Jacinto. In 2000, the trams were updated with two fully modernized 80-passenger cars.

The Experience
The trams make two full rotations during the 15-minute journey offering stunning views of the Sonora desert as well as jagged mountain landscapes. Upon arrival at the top of the tram, passengers can visit the gift shop, the observation deck or dine at the casual Lookout Lounge, or upscale Peaks Restaurant. Nature lovers will want to explore the surrounding San Jacinto State Park with miles of hiking trails and nature walks, modernized campgrounds and various snow activities available during the winter months.

It is a nice thing to do when you are out in that area. The tram takes you up the mountain and the temperature drops significantly when you get to the top and I went in the middle of summer you know how hot it can be in Palm Springs. Nice view from the top, fresh air. It's fun just to go up there and take a hike.

I'm a Palm Springs native and have been on the tram at least 20 times. The ride is exciting, the views incredible, and the hiking and cross-country skiing at the top are awesome. You can find easy, moderate, and difficult hikes. Bring a picnic, you camera, and plan to hang out for the day. In the winter it's fun just to go up to play in the snow.
