Editorial Review for Bally Total Fitness – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
Most Ballys stick to the basics for their design. Televisions broadcast silently above multiple rows of cardio machines; mirrored walls act as the primary decorative components. But thanks to high-energy television ads and low-impact membership premiums, this national fitness chain has steadily attracted a clientele bent on saving money while losing weight or gaining muscle.
The Workout
Using fairly standard strength-training equipment and/or racks well-stocked with free weights, the best of the trainers here, who are classified at four different levels, can be as skillful as those found at costlier gyms. For group classes, signature exercise options include Spinning and Powerflex, as well as a number of patented routines inspired by Tae Kwon Do.

I signed up for Bally's...they wouldn't give me any information really over the phone. They said rates all depended on what machines I wanted to use. I asked about the enrollment fee and starting fees, they said there were none. I went down there, asked about an enrollment fee, there was none they said. They gave me a tour, I went to sign up and the membership price was much higher than they quoted me and I had a $100 enrollment fee. The staff there is rude and manipulative. Machines break and they don't fix them. They offer special benefits, like free personal trainer sessions, when you sign up, and then they don't give them to you. And the equipment's not that great. Awful gym, sign up at your own risk!
Pros: it's a gym
Cons: manipulative, mislead, broken equipment, rude staff

I went in with a free trial pass I'd printed out, hoping to get a tour, a list of classes and some info on how to get started. I did get a tour but then was led into a small office and barraged with a long agressive sales pitch. The staff member would not let up and when I wouldn't budge on my desire to try the club out before joining, she sent in another staff member to work on me. I felt like I was enduring some sort of interrogation. Needless to say, I never went back.
Cons: high pressure sales
