horrible gym, decent equipment, all pretty good spin instructors, extensive tuneups, good updated facility, obviously dirty machines, best spinning classes
They don't care about their customers.
I just got off the phone with billing because (apparently) I was just charged again for another month of membership when I have been trying to cancel it!
See, they have this policy where, if you want to cancel, you have to LOG into your account online, PRINT out a cancellation form, STAMP it, and MAIL it in. You must do this 10-20 days before you want to cancel!! It's not even like you have to fill out anything on the form. They just do this so that they can keep charging you while this form gets lost in the mail.
So naturally, I decide that I want to cancel my membership, but have to pay for another month because my billing cycle was coming up and I didn't "mail" the form in yet. Then I mail it in and see that I am charged AGAIN the next month! When I called them, I explained that I sent the cancellation form weeks ago. They asked if I had "proof of mailing"? As if I'd send a piece of paper certified mail.
They refused to refund the charges, even though I haven' been there in months. As a courtesy (more like a sl-p in the face) the guy said he'd cancel it over the phone (wow, they can do that???) but he wouldn't refund my charges.
This gym simply does not give a d-mn about people. And they have the policies in place to prove it.
Do NOT go to the Westwood location. This gym is horrible. I had a trainer that stood me up multiple times, I would be there at 7 AM, he would just no-show. Each time this happened the club deducted training sessions that I NEVER got back. The staff is VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Saying childish and rude things to each other while training you, talking on cell phones, discussing the latest party and even other CLIENTS. This place is a joke. The college kids here never put the weights back after they use them, you have to look all over the gym to find weights that are scattered in various locations on the floor. The equipment is filthy. YUCK.
Nice, decent gym. LA Fitness is definitely good for what you're paying for (as a student, I pay only $40/month, and I think most people pay only $50). It is clean and spacious, with tons of weights and machines - even at peak times I always find a cardio machine available. When you sign up, they offer you a free personal training session. The locker rooms are fairly modern and well-kept, and there is also a jacuzzi for relaxing after a workout. The gym has floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto Wilshire Blvd, which can be a bit unnerving (like a fishbowl) but you learn to ignore it. I love that , unlike some gyms, LA Fitness never gets too hot inside - they definitely control the temperature well. The crowd is fairly young and fit, but it's not at all intimidating. I would recommend this gym if you're living in Westwood and can't afford Equinox. Also, they have their own parking structure.
Young professionals and struggling actors find a happy medium between L.A.'s expensive and cheapo gyms..
The Scene
Brightly colored walls enclose spacious workout rooms containing equipment ranging from state-of-the-art to pretty decrepit. Passable locker rooms provide clean showers, but no extra amenities. Watch out for personal trainers who can sometimes cramp the workout areas. But they're a small price to pay for a gym that's clean, affordable and more about working out than being checked out.
The Details
Those wanting a good sweat may face a wait for the popular machines. The elliptical trainers can be packed during peak hours (5pm-8pm, Mon-Thu), but there is a decent quantity of other choices, including Stairmasters and stationary cycles. Instructors of varying level of experience teach classes ranging from Spinning to step aerobics to yoga. Those seeking trendier alternatives (strip aerobics anyone?) may be disappointed as the class slate is a bit behind the times, but is catching up fast.
WORST GYM EVER!. This gym is horrible! Not only are the trainers not efficient but the gym is dirty and unorganized. They over charged me for training sessions as well as other peoples gym fee.
It's fine. This LA Fitness attracts a lot of college students and young professionals. There are a lot of cardio machines available, but if you go between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. there will be a wait for machines. There is almost always a line. I would just beware of the sales people and the trainers though. The trainers are hired through the LA Fitness Company are usually dissatified people with questionable worries. As long as you do that, it should be a positive experience.
An Average Fitness Club. Large facility but the machines/equipment are poorly maintained. Almost all the bikes in the spin class require extensive tune-ups. The spin instructors are all pretty good. And like most LA Fitness clubs, the sales people are sleazy.
Spinning Wheels. Large, updated facility is good for weight-lifters, but the spinning classes are the best. Classes are held in a seperate room, and most of the instructors (especially Briana) are awesome.
