Editorial Review for The Echo – by Patrick Green
The Scene
Everybody knows there's a heavy hipster herd of artists, musicians, writers and the like residing on L.A.'s Eastside, namely Echo Park and Silver Lake. And it's also well known that, with this crowd, cutting-edge music is a must. Echo, cousin of the scene-making Spaceland, is a great spot for new grooves. Located in a former Latin disco, the dusty floor, sticky vinyl booths and mirrored walls may resemble the interior of a seedy strip club, but this place is about fresh sounds, not fancy digs. Every DJ-oriented night is different, and offers a chance to see and hear groundbreaking styles and sounds before anyone else.
The Draw
There's a definite freestyle fellowship that extends from the DJs and performers to an audience comprised of b-boy cats and funky felines. This vibrant vibe creates an abstract ambience where anything can--and does--happen on the stage and the dance floor.

You never forget your first time..... My first time at the "spot" as my buds cal it was about a month back. A good friend of mine came back from Spain, and we rustled up some old random friends and made the trek from San Pedro, ca about 45 mins out. I was supposed to not go, cuz i was the guy just out off work, being the grump not bringing any extra clothes for myself, so i rocked the suit, felt a bit odd, but i stepped off the back patio, and all my worries faded to green,. purple, and blue, but needless to say i had no probs after that! I have been back twice since, and always dig everything the whole thing, the club is the perfect spot to meet and listen to quality music, and meet quality people. Being from a small city like san pedro, finding another nook somewhere out there where you can just vibe, is awesome. I know the sunken city sweaters will be seen all throgh the "spot" from now on
Pros: all
Cons: non

...at the Echo was a drag. The headline band that we went to see was only allowed to play four songs before the djs tookover during a break and never let them back on. If this was the idea all along, it wasn't advertised that way. No sign of the alleged complimentary champagne at midnight, and the bouncers stood by idly while a skinhead-looking character moshed into a couple in front of him to drive them away. Not cool. With a little better management this could be a great venue for live music, but the guys in charge seem to take the crowds for granted - we'll take our boozing elsewhere.
Pros: Good acts
Cons: Bad vibes, misleading advertising
