Most assume Kansas, Texas, Alabama and the Carolina's are the only states who know how to Q. Well, step aside and make room for Santa Maria. A Central Coast regoin of California that would make any Southerner shudder with envy.
What is Santa Maria BBQ? It's a top seceret dry rub, used mostly for tri-tip and other beefy cuts. The Santa Maria BBQ Company in Culver City gets it right!
A Spencer Steak,Rib Eye or Flat Iron Steak are a few of the meaty options. Their renditions of "burgers" also step outside of the box. The sides have a California spin on them. I love the rice, potato salad and the special salad.
I love that you can also get salads and grilled veggies here. It's quick service so it's a great place to go when you're in a rush!

PLEASE! Do NOT categorize yourselves as the 'Santa Maria Barbeque'. You have no affiliation with them (do you? I pray not) What you charge for your lunches, dinners, etc. is far beyond what should be charged. The food is NOT good..
I was so excited to know that Santa Maria BBQ had come to Culver City. But when I tried their food. IT WAS DISCUSTING. Nothing like Santa Maria. Where do you get your meat from? Leather factory?
Come one guys.. be cooks and make a real BBQ..

We read other reviews and tried to look for the good when we chose to try this place.WRONG
The service was awful and the food a close second. Every thing was cold and when we told the waitress the problem, she became very rude with her response. The ribs were very, very salty.The chicken was tasteless.
This all was very expensive. We were very sorry to have come here.
I was skeptical but extremely pleased. After reading some bad reviews I was skeptical about getting take out here. I love bbq and am pretty picky about it. I'm familiar with Santa Maria style and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and flavor of SMB. I tried the pulled pork, baby back ribs, tri-tip, beans and cole slaw. The pork made a great sandwich, ribs were tender and flavorful and the tri-tip was nice and rare and not too tough. What really sold me was the sauce. Nice and vinegary, not too sweet and complimented everything I put it on. The cole slaw, while not much to look at, actually had great flavor. I will definitely order from there again

I took my parents here when they were visiting from out of town. We walked in and there were two small parties in the restaurant. No one in line. It was pretty dead. I ordered off the menu and was told that it was a different price. I asked what it was and the waitress at the cashier threw the menu to me and rolled her eyes. there was nothing on the menu with the same name and description. I asked what she was referring to and she snatched it away from me and said "HERE" and pointed to the item which was very different than what I ordered. I didn't want it so I decided to order something else (we should have left then, but we had been out all day and were hungry and the other restaurants like Akasha and Ford's were packed).
The woman taking our order started tapping her nails on the cash register. Still no one behind us.
We ordered got out drinks and sat down at the only clean table. We asked for silver but wound up getting our own. When the food came out the plates were plopped down in front of us and we weren't asked who's meal was who's. By this time 2 couples had come in and were sitting together. They were treated like royalty. Their orders were taken at the table instead of the register, they were given silverware, plastic cups instead of the paper cups that we were given. They were given refills, while I had to get my own.
We were well dressed, polite...there was no reason for the treatment we received.
And to top it off, none of the food we ordered had barbeque sauce cooked on it. We put the sauce on ourselves..and it was tasty, but watery...almost like a marinade than a sauce.
Won over this former BBQ hater. Santa Maria turned me back on to BBQ after years of despising this genre of food. I love their hot, BBQ chicken sandwich on a mid-sized, warm, soft French baguette. The fries aren?t done crispy, leaving their potato flavor in tact, though somewhat limp in shape. Dining in the small, outside patio area facing the heart of downtown Culver City further enhances the restaurant experience. I?d say Santa Maria is a great place if you?re craving BBQ and looking for a casual, sit-down lunch in the Culver City area.
Great quick casual on a street with fine dining. Most of the other restaurants on this block are super expensive, and although this is one of the quick casual options here, they're prices are kinda high...at least for what you get. I missed the lunch prices by 40 min, so I guess I could be wrong, but wish it were a little cheaper...would make it a lot sweeter
Good, if you like prison food. First I'll start with the good points, as few as there are. The location of this place is really good. There are places you can go within walking distance after eating to get your mind off the horrible barbecue you just consumed. The staff aren't the friendliest in the world but I wouldn't say they are rude either. Now for the food. Wow. I had the bbq pork ribs and before even biting into it I wasn't impressed. You could tell it was really dry not to mention really puny. I'm not a big fan of the dry rub ribs but these tasted like they were dry rubbed with gravel. The flavoring was just salty and the little bit of meat on the bones weren't tasty at all. I don't recall it being all that expensive but for what you get at this place, a total jip. Use this site to find much much better bbq all within 10 miles of this forgettable place.
Love BBQ? Avoid this place...Bad Tex-Mex, Bad service, ICK!.
Somehow the Santa Maria BBQ has managed to get several good reviews. I have no idea how, but suffice to say my experience there was bad enough that I have to assume they are shills!
SERVICE: Poor. The staff was relatively pleasant in an aloof sort of way. The cashier had made a mistake in my order, and when I pointed this out to the staff, they explained to me in no uncertain terms that they had no intention of fixing it. The matter was quite small, one side order versus another, and I was astounded that not only would they not fix it, but they clearly regarded me as quite suspicious for even requesting that they fix it.
PRICE: About what you'd expect to pay for decent BBQ, which is far too much for the Santa Maria. See below.
FOOD: First off, do not come here under the impression that they serve BBQ. Not even close. They have managed to produce a bland imitation of something that might be mistaken at some distance for Texas-style BBQ, but mostly they just serve smoked meat and middle-of-the-road fresh-Mex. The side dishes were also uniformly poor, and the portions quite small, which in this case is a good thing.
Let me give you an idea of the quality of the food here in more specific terms: I ordered the chicken plate, which came with three small pieces of vaguely "smoked" chicken, some garlic bread fresh out of your grocer's freezer case, tasteless potato salad, and some stale cole slaw I didn't order. The quality of the chicken itself was not terrible, it was obviously decent chicken at some point, however one of them was actually cold in the middle. I was Astounded. Absolutely astounded. Having already been given to understand that complaints about the food were not welcome, we just left!
In conclusion: AVOID THIS RESTAURANT. There are innumerable great places to eat in Culver City, and hopefully when this place goes out of business, we'll have another...that should be soon.
A surprisingly big disappointment.
My husband and I ordered takeout from this restaurant recently. When my husband arrived, they first had no record of the order, then they found the order but it was incorrect. We didn't really care - mistakes happen and maybe it was our miscommunication. But, the woman who helped us was extremely rude. She kept insisting it was our mistake and even went so far as to say "we NEVER make mistakes". My husband had a drink at the bar to wait for the new order and she sought him out to further argue that it wasn't their mistake. My husband had to finally tell her to leave him alone and drop it. She said she didn't care if he ever ate there again. I couldn't believe it -- I don't think I've ever seen service this bad!
And even worse, the ribs we ordered were easily the worst ribs we've ever tasted (maybe they did that on purpose). They were extremely dry and overcooked and the bbq sauce was on the side instead of being basted over the ribs. We did enjoy the tri-tip, which was very good.
